Re: brass fittings in still - yea or nay?
my tubing is one straight run; the brass fitting is what I need to connect to the pot head/lid. In looking at the brass fittings on-line, I did notice some were listed as "lead free", but wanted to ask here for opinions from knowledgeable folks.

brass fittings in still - yea or nay?
i have read here that copper and stainless or okay, but aluminum is a big no. What about brass? One brass fitting (if safe) would eliminate the need for soldering in my design (my first, learning as I go).

building first still with a question on worm size
I am building my first still and am wondering about the size of the worm/coil. I am using a 6 quart pot, and the coil is roughly 20 feet of 1/4 inch copper tubing. I have about 1 foot of 3/8 tubing coming off of the pot to fit the outlet, then necked down to the 1/4 inch. Is the 1/4 inch coil going ...

Please check my math on discarding fore shots
I have been researching here, and from I have seen, this is what is recommended for discarding as foreshots: 100ml for 20L of wash, or 150ml for 25L of wash. Whittling these down, I come up with discarding 25 to 30 ml for a 5L wash. Also, in US measurements, I saw 1/3 pint for a 5 gallon wash. I con...

Re: my first mash: results and questions
Okay, so using/not using malted corn will only change the flavor of the mash and then ultimately the distillate? Also, as noted above, why would the yeast/water mixture not work but the dry yeast would?

Re: my first mash: results and questions
You bring up another question that I had, but thought had been answered. One thing said his recipe made no mention of yeast, and another claimed that he said that using yeast was a "shortcut". I think (not sure) that I have also read malted corn does possess wild yeast and will suffice and...

my first mash: results and questions
While still waiting to get a still built and running, I decided I would experiment with malting and mashing on a small scale. After doing the math, I reduced Popcorn's recipe down to 1 cup corn meal, 2 cups sugar, 1 gallon water, and 1/4 cup of corn that I had malted. I brought the water to just sho...

My introductory post
Understanding it's good manners to post here first, here it is. I have been interesting in distillation for years, mainly with a "can I build a still and make it work" mentality. So, that's what I'm in the process of doing, mainly to see if I can. And the product of the process is just a b...

how long is malted corn good?
I have malted some corn, and dried and ground it up. How long will it last? It will be a while before my still is ready to go, but just wanted to see if I could make malt my own corn and hate to throw this away if it will last a long time. And any special requirements on storing it?
