I use an aquarium heater to help with winter temps. Cheap and fairly reliable.

I use a small transfer pump with stainless cam lock fittings. Everything is mounted and plumbed in place. Just attach the hose and flip a switch.

Re: need ideas - newbie column build

You can make a flute or any other column with very few tools. Easy flange for all your connections, coils can be done by hand if you take your time. All the info is in here if you do the digging.

I put the first one 3" off the bottom and 4" apart if using multiple. My boilers are flat bottom and 3" gives me plenty of clearance when screwing the element in .

This time of year I tend to experiment with yeast that likes the cold. I have run ujssm in the past with bakers yeast using an aquarium heater to keep the temp warm and stable. Outside temp was in the 30's and still finished in a week.

Re: Bought a 60 year old metal lathe

Nice find. I would like to add a word of caution. A lathe is not forgiving at all and can cause serious trauma in an instant. As an engineer and tool and die maker of over 20 years I have seen it first hand. A friend of mine with over 30 years experience got his arm torn off at the elbow. It happene...

What about a Router Speed Controller....? I believe they are just HD rheostats, not the preferred variac. However, because they are designed to regulates the speed of a router motor, probably up to 3 HP at say 10-15 amps, wouldn't that do just as well...? Easy to plug into wall, and plug heating ele...

Boiler size how much does size matter

I have a really large boiler but my wash usually runs in the 6-7% range. Most with a 15gal boiler probably make more than I do.

Re: 4 Inch Copper Column. Mongo Stripper ???

I just finished up a 4" 8 plate and I get about 1 liter every 4 minutes running full tilt. Any faster and I can't knock down all the vapor without working on the condenser . I would think you should be able to run about the same.

I sold the 6". I usually end up selling most of the ones I build and end up doing the first few runs at someone else's house.. Lol. This one was mostly built out of left overs from other builds. I only had to buy a few parts for this build most of which went to the controller and sight glasses.

I solder everything in place . I braze the riser tubes and use stay brite #8 on the caps. There is 1000°f melt temp between the two so no chance of the tubes coming loose when you solder the caps

At some point you need to post about that controller...please... The pid controllers are for monitoring ...

Not overkill :D you' might need it. But, that tall of a 8 plate column, is going to have a lot of passive reflux, to keep the lower plates wet. that's kinda what I'm worried about. I have never built a 4" column this tall so I'm not sure how it's going to work. I've built a 6" 8 plate and...
