In my one and only grain scorch I found that after filtering 6 to 7 times it was "ok".
Not good, just ok.

I often save some fresh wash to add to the spirit run. Compared to that, the amount of wash that comes over in a bit of a puke is tiny.
Exactly this!

All,

I had molasses coming through on my stripping run. My condenser handled it but what could have caused this?

Tabucowboy
How much?
A little? Just collect and rerun when you get it all stripped out.
A lot? Shut down, clean, add butter or oil as tubbsy said and start back up.

Re: Pineapples???m

I made some Pineapple rum, it turned out pretty good. I added rum that I aged in oak for a good long while IIRC to a bunch of cut up pineapple in a big carboy and let it sit for 6 plus months. Then I filtered out the fruit and bottled the rum as Christmas gifts. No experience trying to actually ferm...

Re: Pot still, single run.

Good on you for taking in all the 'advice' and keeping a cool clear head. Bread yeast is great for making rum, it's made from molasses after all. It's not necessarily the best for making whiskey / whisky. Think beer, think ale, think of a style of whiskey that you want to emulate and find out what y...

Sheep Dip So interesting. The name clearly implies somebody is ruffling the feathers of status quo. The color seems a bit more robust compared to so many other scotches? Maybe just the lighting? Dunno? Would this be the bourbon drinkers scotch? Please explain the taste/mouth feel/ complexity. And h...

Re: What's your favourite commercial Scotch?

I have a couple of the Laphroag bottles here that are mentioned above, quite good but the 10 Cask is a bit smokey even for me. My all time favorite bottle for character of spirit was that Auchentoshan 21 Sherry cask finished, that was memorable. Had a few of the 21 gun salute bottles that are so cra...

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?

I'm gonna do the water soak on it tonight I have never needed to soak a Gibbs barrel overnight, you would lose some of that oaky goodness to that water. In my five gal barrels Iput about a half gal of hot water in seal the bung and just slosh it around looking for any leeks, if any they do quickly ...

So I just got a level 4 char barrel.is this what I can expect from the it when I drain it I have experienced more of this sediment in the larger barrels. Makes sense, more inside area so more bits left behind. There were some larger pieces but those are easily discarded, the dregs can be filtered a...

Re: Cold aging

Also I should just point out a smaller barrel "ages faster". There's an inner area to volume calculation somewhere here on HD that shows how much slower the larger barrels are at aging. I have used 5 gallon, 8 gallon and 15 gallon. It takes one hell of a lot of still time to fill a 15 gallon barrel,...

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?

The wisdom that comes from aging in a proper barrel is priceless.
Cranky you view the loss from unsealed jars to be acceptable because you have experienced the loss from a proper barrel.
You also know to view this as a good thing, because the alchemy that must happen requires that sacrifice.

That's exactly what it was, the filter had a lot of tiny silty looking charcoal in it.

Bottom of the barrel - what to do?

I went out and got the final bit of rum from the bottom of the barrel today. Black nasty looking stuff, but great smell. I have had some white rum in carboys since 2018 so I wanted that to have a turn in this barrel. Here's what I got out: IMAG6257.jpg Like I said, black as the devil's heart. So I r...

I'll let Bushman explain Solera aging. It was a shit-ton of work to fill a 15 gallon once used Bourbon barrel with Panela rum. Then of course I took some out at a year, more at a year and a half, even more at 2 years. The stuff that was left at 3 years was truly amazing, I do buy some 18 to 25 year ...

I actually prefer spent barrels in some cases.
I like the aging effect without the oaking.
Of course your taste might be different.
I haven't used any of mine enough times for them to be "spent".
