Re: Odin's Easy Gin

Congrats! If it gets cloudy, it means you get all the taste oils over. If you dilute, they get out of solution. Add 43% neutral until it lifts. You will know when you get there, because the cloudiness lifts in seconds, when you add enough neutral. Then give it 5 weeks of rest. Okay, try sipping aft...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

I ended up removing the larger pieces of mandarin peel, replacing with 1gm/litre of finely grated mandarin zest (absolutely no white!) and macerated for a week. I ran the gin today with all of the botanicals and zest in the boiler and I am sipping on a glass right now :D It is very intense! I am hop...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

Thanks for all the info and help guys. Sounds like I'm right to still on the botanicals. Pulled the rind last night anyway because I won't have a chance to run it for a few days.

Cheers :)

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

The answer is in Oden's second post of this thread. Indeed it is! I had read this thread several times excitedly preparing for my first gin and didn't take in that point somehow.... I'm using a still with an internal exposed element, any guesses as to whether I'm risking scorching the botanicals? I...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

I could run it soon but I am keen to follow the recipe (re: maceration time) and I'm not happy with the juniper/coriander flavour intensity yet... I'm thinking I may pull the mandarin, dry it and take the white part out (I left too much in I think) then reintroduce it around day 7-8 and continue unt...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

Hi, I have my first batch macerating for 24 hours now, original recipe but scaled up 2.5 times. Only change was instead of tangerine I used mandarin peel because that's all I could get at the local shop. 24 hours later it's already getting bitter... Should I pull out some of the mandarin peel? I pla...

Re: Better Operation of a Brew Shop CM Still (novice guide)

Doh, it is too! :P I did my first spirit run today and all things considered it went pretty well. It is interesting to note that the higher the ABV of the charge inside the still the less surging I experience. Early in the run there was very little surging, but as the run continued I had similar sur...

Re: Better Operation of a Brew Shop CM Still (novice guide)

Great info on here Kiwi! I have just finished my second stripping run (Odin's Cornflake Whiskey) using the still in pot mode. I removed all the packing and disconnected the hose that runs the cooling water from the condenser back up to the reflux condenser and run the cooling water back out from the...

Re: Residual unfermentable sugars in dry malt extract?

Oh I've read the book... cover to cover! I just didn't think to reference it in relation to the extract I've been using. I'm not too interested in using enzymes etc to increase alcohol production, just curious to check what to expect from bakers yeast with my current wort. I think there is another e...

Re: Residual unfermentable sugars in dry malt extract?

Thanks for the link. I have the book but didn't think to read it for some reason :? It looks like the darker the extract the higher the expected finishing gravity will be. I brewed this recipe with US-05 recently and it finished at 1.010 after 3.5 weeks in a temperature controlled environment with a...

Residual unfermentable sugars in dry malt extract?

How dry is dry when working with bakers yeast? I have Odin's Cornflake whiskey fermenting (Day 5) and cO2 production seems to have stopped. SG is 1010. When fermenting beer using the same extract, I found it to finish very high compared to using all grain. Is it possible that it won't go any lower t...

Re: First stripping run... questions!!

I'm wondering if I have re-jigged the cooling hoses on my still head unit properly for best pot still usage... Here is a pic of how I have configured it: http://i57.tinypic.com/2ryq4vr.jpg As you can see the cold water enters on the left travels through the "worm" up and then back down bef...

Re: First stripping run... questions!!

I'm using a CM reflux (essencia, still spirits etc type thing) but I have disconnected the water that goes to the reflux jacket. Water goes in at the bottom and comes out at the other side (not at the top, at the same height but on the other side) hot. I have read that for distilling whisky it is be...

Re: First stripping run... questions!!

Nope, internal exposed element heating source. There was something unusual about the power source though... I did the run in my laundry and the old owners of the house had a surge protector plugged into the power socket next to the washing machine http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/crest-single-outl...

Re: First stripping run... questions!!

Thanks Googe. I measured the water coming out of the condenser before returning to the sink and it was in the low-mid thirties most of the time. Does that indicate that my cooling water isn't cold enough? I suppose the method I used today is fine enough for a stripping run but I will need to lower t...

First stripping run... questions!!

Heyo, I did my first stripping run today on a 30L still spirits CM reflux still that I detuned into pot still mode. It took 70 minutes to heat up a 20 litre charge and I ended up getting 6.5L of low wines at about a rate of 2L per hour. My wash was Odin's cornflake whiskey which I made to 8% ABV and...

Let me introduce myself :)

Howdy :D Been lurking awhile.... And although this isn't even my first proper post, I thought before going too much further the proper thing to do is to introduce myself. I am a longtime AG beer brewer, but beer drinking isn't the best for my waistline so lately I have been drinking plenty of whiske...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

Hello! I made this recipe over a week ago and I'm pretty excited for my first stripping run with it! I am an experienced AG beer brewer and am pretty confident in my fermentation practices but I have a few questions regarding this particular recipe... Do you guys strain or filter it at all? My wash ...
