Re: Winows XP
you'll be fine. xp will be supported by many programs and will run your PC just fine till it suffers from parts failure. after that you may start running into issues trying to throw new parts onto an old machine.

Re: Legalizing Hobby Distilling in the US
i actually studied politics a lil bit, and i assume i know how well a few things work. if you want to make changes, you have to do it at the local level. city reps, county reps and such as that. those guys are the ones who if you get on your side will help you win over the state. most state reps, if...

listen to them. a pot still with a thumper and a coil ends up causing you so much grief and after you are done you'll be wishing you had done something different. promise ya that.

Re: finally done....
boy i was off my rocker when i posted that message. i did strip runs off my 2 washes. tossed first one as the sacrifice. 2nd one i ran again with a few gallons of water. Low and slow this time. tossed the fores, tossed the heads, took the hearts, tossed the tails. mixed hearts and got the 3 quarts 1...

well i took my run and stripped it all once with a final product of 3 quarts of crystal clear at 150 proof. it's got a harsh taste after filtering. think it could of been the mash. i did a few shots and havent dropped dead yet though. now comes experiment time. i'm doing a 50/50 mix with apple cider...

i cheated with my gasket. used strips of cotton cloth and soaked them in a flour/water mix. probably gonna be the only decent way to cheat.

Re: first run (finally...)
Congrats on your first run mate!. Did you do cleaning and sac runs?. Sounds like you didn't do cuts?. When you say its cloudy, was it cloudy from the start?. If so, you've probably run it to hard and smeared over tails, might explain the low abv too, if not, then its just oils in tails mixed with h...

first run (finally...)
it's so damn late. couldn't help myself. pitched it all to the fire tonight, tossed off the foreshots and half the heads (for good measure). collected a quart of heads for next run. grabbed 3 quarts hearts, and now grabbing tails for next run. all of it ran at 90 proof. and cloudy as hell. way too t...

finally got my controller hooked up. go outside, pop open the breaker box only to find there are no spaces left. had to make a few. amps meter does not work on the controller, but it does work. no leaks inside the boiler. fill the cooling barrel with water only to find it leaks bad. i go ahead and t...

Personally I disagree. No disrespect towards anyone but I learn more by doing vs. reading. If I mess up Iv learned. However I will never turn a blind eye towards safety although personally I take it lightly as I'm not a sissy boy. Fire doesn't scare me and I know enough about fire, vapor and air ci...

You also forgot the homemade mash recipe of 3lbs of sugar to a gal of water and that aluminum pressure cooker with rubber gaskets holds 60 gal and that turbo yeast don't require cuts just active carbon to clean up the taste for 200 proof whiskey. what the hell? why didn't you guys tell me it was th...

Was the water boiled? If it was next time aerate the wash before pitching the yeast. it was boiled. i just never flaked the grains before tossin them. i shoulda known better of course. they are slowly working. i think what helped is adding heat to excite the yeast. i got home and the bubbles were s...

Re: 100 mistakes and then some
i think my ultimate goal was to create a breeding ground for the yeast using the sugar wash and letting them switch to the grains afterwards to work on flavoring it all. i know the yeast i use is rated up to 22% but i did not plan at all to aim that high. the corn and rice were boiled but not flaked...

Re: 100 mistakes and then some
Try a 1:1 weight ratio between sugar and cracked grain in your next sugar head and ditch those nasty chemical nutrients. I'm an avid fan of food sourced nutrition. What size is your still? A 5 gallon ujssm seems small considering the nature of that particular wash. If I only had a 5 gallon pot stil...

Re: 100 mistakes and then some
If it's still bubbling and doesn't have a dry cider taste and smell it probably isn't done . I don't know why folks focus so much on 5 day ferments and run so much green beer because of that . That ferment is done when your taste , smell , and hydrometer tell you it is . Yeasts are wonderful little...

Forget a day schedule . It will finish when it is finished . Taste and smell mean more than time schedules . Truck driver philosophy : If it feels good ; do it . Re: Looking for a foe
Soooo I learned a little something today. Adding a foe on here doe not mark them as your nemesis for life, neither does it allow for clever back and forth banter, nor an epic fight scene at the end. All it does is put evil-doing arch super villain on an ignore list, where they can wreak havoc on th...

don't be hard on yourself buddy. i, like you, made alot of mistakes. as long as you make sure to not blow up or poison yourself or others around you, then the mistakes are just a learning curve.
my mash ran for 3 days before i got a hydrometer. now i don't know what i'll come out with.

i went into a wine supply store locally (awesome place and prices might i add), and told the shop keeper i was there for a hydrometer. he gets that for me, grabs a proofer (can't think if theres a proper name at the moment) as well as some turbo yeast. I was like "whoa! slow down there." c...
