Trying to understand this still
I picked up a bunch of scrap stainless steel stuff and there was what appears to be a still in the pile. But I don't understand why and if it will even work. Appears that there is no packing, but a cooling line is wrapped around the entire tower... almost

Re: Sourcing Long tube copper and SS
Yeah I guess not as much a question as a observation . didn't expect a stainless to be more than the copper pipe. Also tossing it out if anyone knew the difference between the drinking water safe sanitary and the other types of 304. Still hoping to come across a scrap pipe somewhere.

Effect of Copper vs Stainless(with copper packing)
In a Reflux type still, the distillate is passed over the packing many times during the process. If one had between 4-5' of copper packing, would that bind all the sulfates? The common practice is to keep copper along all vapor paths. But does it need that much surface area, OR would most to all of ...

Sourcing Long tube copper and SS
I was hunting through Grainger today as it turns out none of my local spots carry 2" anything. Copper type M 5ft is $68 The stainless is interesting though - something about a safe drinking water act and "Drinking water safe" Stainless 304 $138 http://www.grainger.com/product/PARKER-T...

Re: Equipment Sanitation
I use starsan to clean my immersion chiller when brewing. It needs to be properly diluted. And will definitely take the copper to a shine in 10 mins or so. But it has not pitted it up at all yet. Maby ten cleanings done? I keep starsan in a bottle and spray EVERYTHING as I'm working. including surfa...

Re: Cost per liter of product
Can you please explain yourself a little better? I can try, for what its worth. I have been a bartender for years before getting my current career job. Always been interested in not only the history of alcohol but the way its made. I have taken many courses on the chemistry of beer. Alcohol product...

Re: Cost per liter of product
i can definately make better product cheaper than what i can buy shit for. as far as beer spending 2k without making a drop is just more money than brains in my opinion. I think it's more about the challenge of building it for me. As it turns out electronic controllers steel and kegs ain't cheap. l...

Re: Cost per liter of product
I use both in day to day. only recently got a source of 190 proof everclear, Its semi illegal(illegal to consume) in PA. I had to get a license to buy it. But good to know. In my beer brewing adventures I always thought i would save money making my own beer. But my brewery has cost me over $2K and s...

Cost per liter of product
I just got asked a question about how much the ingredient s cost vs how many liters output. has any one done the math yet on UJSSM or sugar based wash of how much it costs you per liter? heat energy included if you know. How do our costs compare to a commercial ethanol like everclear or denatured. c...

Copper packing lifespan
I'm still trying to decide between stainless and copper for the main body of my build. I understand the copper binds with sulfites to form copper sulfide which can later be dissolved with a citric acid formula but in doing so is the copper used up? How often does copper packing need to be replaced, ...

Hey guys! I have been into brewing beer for a number of years and i'm just bringing together the last parts of a 1/2 bbl brewery RIMS build. I have always been drawn to the culture of alcohol more than the drinking of I guess. I enjoyed my years as a bartender hearing the stories of travelers, peopl...
