Re: Want to make a mash tun

It for sure does not need to be copper. I just made a new mash tun with a 48 qt Igloo Marine cooler, bought an assembled SS ball valve with bulkhead (Amazon sale) to replace the drain and use a 1/2 fitted "bazooka screen". There are a ton of different ways to do it as SC mentioned, just do...

Re: What are you all using for fermenters.

I started with glass but over time have seen one too many accidents with glass carboys. Having a 2 year old in the house plus for my own personal safety I now use 4, 6 gal better bottle carboys, and I have a few 6.5 gal hdpe buckets if needed, but those are mostly for beer!

Re: Turbo Yeast? Have you tried it? why all the hate?

Like PP says, it's for fuel.
It ferments up to ~25 percent, which stresses the yeast, who cause esters, which makes your product taste like crap.
Keep your wash/mash around 10-12 percent max for happy yeast. Best to aim for 8percent.

Typical.... "I'm here to learn"

But I'm going to keep using turbo even though I have been told by seasoned liquor makers it is garbage.

Good luck

You should not use turbo in ANYTHING! you will be amazed at the difference!
For brandys I use ec-1118, ferments nice and clean, everything else good ol' bakers yeast does the trick!

Will be running my first "apple brandy" in a few days. All organic AJ, came in glass 1 gal jugs, so bonus there. Tossed one packet of EC-118 per 3 gal of juice (overkill I know) Been running for just under a month and all activity on airlocks has stopped completely. Fermenting 6 gallons fo...

Re: Wannabe whisky maker

You flake stand looks a bit small. Do you have circulating water? I see what looks like a run off tube at the top, but are you piping cool water in the bottom? Without constant circulation that worm is going to have trouble, and might be the cause of your vapor problem if you are not cooling properly.

Yea, if I were you I would hope its dead. Good excuse to get some real yeast. Depending on what you are making basic bakers yeast works great in most circumstances!
Good luck!

Want to share a great find that a friend shared with me. I know people are a little cautious of ordering supplies in the internet, especially with the TTB heat lately, but if you make beer this is a great cover, and very handy. http://www.homebrewing.org/5-Gallon-Cornelius-Keg-Pin-Lock-Used-Coke_p_8...

No , voicing a negative opinion to a method is not a discussion ,not if its not backed up with negative data or a negative result then it is just thread shitting.
