Re: Cleaning a new still

Any advise for cleaning an old still out there? My still has been in storage for almost 3 years and I'm dusting it off in the next few weeks. It was properly cleaned after the last run and stored in a fermenting barrel, minus the liebig that did not fit. I'm thinking a vinegar run should do the tric...

I'm back

Distillation is almost like a disease. It gets in your blood, it gets in your mind, and body. I have no distillers in my family, but as far back as I can remember, after my first sip from the Appalachia, I knew I was going to do it one day. And a few years back I did. I researched, on this forum, fo...

Re: Was just nosing around the kitchen.. Will this work?

Get yourself a good propane turkey burner. One that will hold a keg for the future! That will be your quickest and easiest route to take. Outside of that your looking at using heating elements, plenty info on those here. I guess you can mod the electric burner to make it not cycle, seems like alot o...

I also use this setup but have unions installed so I can adjust for different thumper hight. I highly recommend them as it makes this a very versatile rig. You can run with or without the thumper this way. Good job on the build it looks great and should give you a many a good drop for many years!!! ...

Look into "nuke ageing" and JD chips....might also help you find a quick whiskey to enjoy.

A simple thing like UJ ant bad unaged also....with something like that you can age half the run and drink the other half. That's what I do, keep it all whiskey, cause that's what I like!

Re: Am I charring enough?

At 6 weeks mine ALWAYS taste like burnt wood. At one year I usually find out that it's amazing or I overchared. It's a loooong learning curve for me, but very fun to experiment.

+1 on the rum. Gotta have some white dog around to sip while you wait for the whiskey.

I'm with ya JB. I've run many times in that temp outside. It's either that or dont still in the winter. I usually just do smaller batches so it's a quick deal. Good time for me to experiment with like 5 or so gallon runs. Coffee....is mandatory. Been there done that on the steam. Bricks were shat. S...

Re: Propane, and a question about cinder blocks.

I use cinder blocks as a wind shield for my turkey burner. Helps alot when there is a breeze outside.

I've used cinder blocks as fire pits before.....ALL cinder blocks eventually break from heat...in my experience.

I wouldn't dare set my boiler on one.
