Re: Badmotivator - We will miss you!
Terrible thing to read, so unfortunate. Before there were BadMo Barrels, there was BadMotivator. He was very active on the forum back in the day when I was just learning myself. He was one of the guys I really enjoyed reading, always clever and enthusiastic, and a hell of a builder/woodworker. Alway...

My Last Whiskey
Well, I think this will be it. I’ve been distilling less and less over the last several years and I’ve gotten to the point of thinking about letting all the gear go. It does take up a lot of room, and I just don’t seem to have as much time as I used to. I’ve already gotten rid of some things, but to...

Re: Brazilian Wood for Aging Cachaças
Did you ever dig those bottles out, MC? Well, thank you for the reminder, dovregubben, I did. 2DF00A33-2D52-4A8D-BEFD-C398154955DC.jpeg First of all, my canary wood experiments were a failure. Hot, bitter, tannic, and citrus pith. Did not like! I had three bottles labeled Amburana, two that read “t...

What a punch in the guts to get the news about TruckinButch. His humor, generosity, and hospitality will be remembered and appreciated for at least the rest of my days. Cheers to the man who established this here bench to visit, whether the day be bright or sad.

Re: I live you, man...
After some beers out on the town tonight I just wanted a little homemade to wind out the evening. I was digging through the shed and ran across a dust covered mason jar labeled “corn malt”. Well, it’s feckin delicious! Made it a loooong time ago and forgot it, but I have all ya here on the forum to ...

Re: working small wort sizes with a large still
My first still was similar to that in size and shape. I’d guess you can cover the element with a few gallons of liquid, so a 6 gallon charge would run ok, you just need to know what you have to work with. You don’t even need to use the thumper, so you could just set that aside, but it would probably...

Without good support the flat bottom will deform before the dents pop compounding the problem. Maybe you will just make a ball! https://youtu.be/kEVG1xGaN6M But, seriously, the Digiboil things look pretty inexpensive to even consider trying to salvage yours. Just get another boiler, you can still u...

Roll Call : Still stillin’, just not as much. Funny, I been thinking about you n Jed lately. I still travel west to east and back, and I just get tired of that PA turnpike sometimes. Two ways to avoid it, one way takes me near Butch, and the other way takes me past Jed. If I need to make many more ...

Re: First Potato Vodka
Sweet potatoes is on my list. Be careful with “sweet potatoes” Around here the things labeled sweet potatoes are actually yams, entirely different creatures. Real sweet potatoes make a nice spirit, mildly fruity, really nice with oak. I roasted mine until there was some caramelized syrup near the s...

Re: First Potato Vodka
Keep at the potatoes, Hawkwing, they do make a good spirit. The yield was always low for me, I think I remember it being about 1/3 of what I would expect from corn, pound for pound. But it was worth it for me to get a unique bottle. I remember it being kinda sweet, and yes, definitely remember that ...

Someone just sent me this link to a video showing a DIY hack to make your own version of this grinder. If I didn’t already have one I’d have tried it!

Welcome in, Raisenman, I think you will find the forum a great help to speed up the learning curve for ya. Being the Welcome Center, I don’t think this will be the best place to have a dustup over glass distilling equipment. Glass is discouraged because it can break easier. And typically mason jars ...

So, it's the beginning of the new year. How did this turn out?! I’m pretty happy with it! I pulled some bottles from the Gibbs barrel back around New Years, filtered it through coffee filters, and wasn’t too thrilled, tasted way over oaked. But I just tasted it again last night and it is really nic...

Not a normal situation around here, but I’m sort of at a loss for words, Cranky! These bottles (2!) are so legit, I love your label, and the back label shoutout to the S3 crew is perfect. And of course, the monkey shoulder bottles just kick it all up a notch. I’m a bit off my feed right now, but I’l...

Sorry to hear of the ordeal the Missus is going through. She’s made of tough stuff though, and I’m guessing she has a lot more watching over you to do.
Anyone going into a hospital needs a good spotter, she’s very fortunate to have you. Lucky to have each other, hang in there.

Re: Adding amalayse after it is gelled
Just add the enzymes and mix, they should re-liquify the gelled corn on their own. I’ve added ground barley malt to buckets of corn that looked like concrete and watched it just dissolve back into liquid magically.

What is the flavor difference between malted and unmalted bloody butcher corn? I have never tasted any corn malted and unmalted side by side. Side by side? Hell, ya could taste them a couple days and a year apart and discover that corn malt isn’t nothing like corn! My corn malt whiskeys have run th...
