Re: Lexan bullet proof "glass" (polycarbonate)

No change in the sample lexan. Looks like it did before I put it in the liquor. That is a 7 month soak in some 95% foreshots, about 4 liters. As mentioned before, the stuff is rated "A" for alcohol, so im not surprised. I have no way of testing the liquid to see if anything leeched out tho...

Re: Unflavouring with carbon straight from the still.

I definatly do reactivate, once the pot is empty. I understand that it may not be neccisary to use carbon at all, but I already have it and the liquor is gonna sit in the pot untill drinking time anyway, so why not have it sit on carbon.

Unflavouring with carbon straight from the still.

I hope this is in the right area, please remove it if it isn't, but I want to know who carbon filters straight from the still. You guys may have drooled over Odin's istill, like me, and I want to incorporate his idea of carbon filtering before the collection point into my refux column. Currently I s...

Re: WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THE LAST JAR

Rager- I too have never yet found the wet dog or cardboard smell. I know when its time to cut, by a flavour I can only describe as gross. In our home we like vodka, not necessarily neutral, but not a strong tasting spirit, I love ujssm vodka, probably more than neutral now, just something that has a...

Re: i wonder why ppl use airlock?

I have used airlocks when I started, now I ferment in trash bins and large containers like that with either no lid or a sometimes a loose lid, ujssm and birdwatchers, I sometimes rack them right away, sometimes let them sit and clear for a week (one time 3 weeks) no infection yet. I understand I may...

Re: Navien Tankless Water Heater (on demand) Uses?

That bosch units are all copper, but the nav is got a lot of plastic components, and definalty no solids they have a fine inlet screen that would plug up with any residue from the wash. I was imagining some type of indirect heat source, like a jacketed boiler. I haven't got to the stage in this hobb...

I was hoping you would see this! I almost pm'd you about this topic before I posted the thread. Ya man if you want one, got one with your name on it, you know where to find me. Since these things are so expensive and not something many people would be able to simply just add to their still room, I d...

Navien Tankless Water Heater (on demand) Uses?

This thread is a dicussion on the possible use of an "ON DEMAND" water heater as a boiler heat source. In my job I have collected a stack of these things. They dont work great in my area to begin with due to poor water quality, plus they get installed improperly often and people want them ...

Re: Aquarium heaters to maintain wash temp

I always use a glass aquarium heater, actually 4 of them, one for each fermenter. For birdwatchers and ujssm. Never had an issue and fermenting takes half the time to clear than without it. I ferment in my basement and it is cold down there.

Food grade 120v pump is a game changer, I got mine from a local plumbing wholesaler and love it. Expensive and soooo worth it! I hated how slow my brew shop siphon was. Plus it was a pain to clean.

Re: ? for those using stainless scrubbers. how do you prep t

The reason my packing was so gross was I had been doin stripping runs with a packed column. Not proper procedure I know, but its a pain to disassemble my rig and remove the scrubbers, so I just leave it set up in the shed. Now I have a pot still too, so only low wines, pot distilled twice go into my...

Awsome. Yes I am going to be using lava rock in my next few builds, after reading the complete "lets talk column packing" I was sold. I already have 55 scrubbers so those will stay with this column, but I do realize they may not be the best. thanks for sharing. I always wonder about how ti...

Do you keep the scrubbers whole? Or do you stretch them out? I streached all of mine out, it was a pain to do and not sure now if it was neccisary.

Looks really good man. I went with a 1" drain on mine and wished I had gone bigger. One thing you may like to add is a sight tube, I used a kit like for a boiler (2 valves and a 12" borosilicate tube.) I love being able to see the liquid level during a run. Not necessary, but just a really...

On my stills I use a bunch of stainless unions. 1" and 2" I found at first they leaked a little bit. To solve that, I wiped I small amount of pipe dope on the inside edge. Works like a champ. This is also what I do on all my gas line unions and water line unions and some of those have pres...
