Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?

Got 130 lbs of Aunt Jemima cornmeal muffin mix for $6.75!!! Corn meal and wheat flour mainly, add enzymes and Bob's your uncle. I dont even have to grind it. The lady at the checkout said "you must really like those muffins" and I told her it was for the kids at bible school. I waited for ...

Re: %&*($#%$ SNOW!!!!

Currently 26 F and at least 6” of new snow! That would be 3 hours of a nice snow this side of the mountains Bushy, but I feel your pain. I lived in Seattle 1981-1992. Snow removal equipment was unheard of, and 6 inches would shut the city down for days. Heat wave here with a high of 18, tomorrow a ...

Re: Bubble plates in 2 inch column?

I get plenty of flavor through on a one and done run (usually chocolate sundae bourbon). I discard the first 500-1000 mls as early heads, save the next liter as late heads in my feints container for a later neutral run. I then will collect 1.5-2 gallons down to a final output of about 20% abv. I fi...

Re: Bubble plates in 2 inch column?

I run a 2inch CCVM on an electric Keg boiler. I also run bubble cap plates for whiskey (I can run 4 plates but prefer 2). My 3 inch borosilicate plate column has 2 inch triclamp ends. You can choose your triclamp diameter on Aliexpress for any 3 inch plated column. The 3 inch plates have 4 caps, on...

Re: I’ve been slimed…help!

intermittent water exchange is the answer. Pool algicide might delay its development. Dont put bleach into the cooling reservoir and run it with bleach. The bleach will eventually erode the copper and solder in your shotgun and result in pinhole leaks. Dont ask me how I know that.... but it took abo...

Re: Temperature Cycling 5 Gallon Barrel

I agree with Brian, it's not worth the effort. I have four 5 gallon barrels that I keep in my yard storage shed. Summer days gets over 100 farenheit in there, nights 60-70. 5 gallon barrels age at about double the rate of a commercial barrell, so 1 year is like a 2 year whiskey or rum. Lots of trick...

Re: Fermenting on Grain Process

I've gone from hand wringing paint strainer bags, to mop wringing those bags, to using the 600 micron bucket strainers. All too labor/time intensive for my liking. I put 10 gallons of settled wash in my boiler, about 5-7 gallons the settled grain in my thumper (porridge to pancake batter consistency...

Ben you are 100% correct, I stand corrected. Lactobacillus will consume sugars during ferment and lower potential ABV, but does not consume alcohol once generated. I misremembered posts on this site from years back. Makes me happier that i dont have to rush my infected mashes!

Re: Is this all Yeast at the bottom?

What was your finished specific gravity? You clearly had sugars in the boiler if it scorched.. either unfermentable or just not yet fermented if you ran too soon. Also what power were you running? You can't get the scorched flavor out by rerunning, better to discard and start over after a good clean...

You might want to chat with Bluefish_dist or at least search his posts on this site. He ran a commercial distillery at elevation in Colorado, and I think was an engineer originally. I own #2, plates are locked into the silicone seals between the glass sections and absolutely cannot slip. You can disassemble and remove the plates and reconfigure with no leaks, but its just a PITA.

I own the second one, but wish i had the first instead. I prefer running 3 plates for whiskey, and its a PITA to disassemble the column each time to try different configurations. But when running, the bubble cap plates are damn sexy!

Probably lactobacillus. Don't sweat it, just let the ferment go till done and run it. Some prefer the flavor after an infection. Lactobacillus will slowly consume alcohol so run it soon as the specific gravity stabilizes.

Re: New column - no actual science, just ideas

40 inches of packed 2inch pipe is the rule of thumb, you've got 12. I think the smaller diameter above is going to have pretty rapid vapor speed and not provide great separation. Don't think you'll ever produce a neutral product with this, but it may make a decent single run whiskey/rum still since ...

Greetings from a fellow Husky. Unless you obtain a commercial license, distillation is illegal under both federal and state law. RCW66.44.14O states that possession of a still, or even a mash capable of producing spirits is a gross misdemeanor. First conviction is fined no less than $500 and no less...

I wouldnt bother with small volume barrels. Cheaper to once buy a used wine barrel, break it down, and char your own dominoes. I can get used 55g wine barrels for $75 and a lifetime supply of dominoes for aging in stainless. I have four 5g barrels (1 rum, 3 whiskey). I live in an arid region and loo...

12 inches is overkill. I add a 6 inch tube to the top of my stainless 2 inch t and thats fine for CCVM. My column is two 24 inch copper tubes, everything is triclamp and modular. I woudnt have ceiling space for a 12 inch tube over the T. My boiler sits on a harbor freight furniture dolly so its mobi...
