I found this link on youtube that shows how to make this kind of wrap. It's not hard at all, just takes a little patience. Thanks for all the posts and have a fine Navy day!

My Bourbon Bottle Design

Re: Backset - how can I use it
Thanks Braz. This helps. I need to get a PH reader I think to monitor during the mashing process. Thanks again.

Backset - how can I use it
After a corn mash stripping run, I've saved my backset. How long will it last. I'm thinking I want to use it control PH in my next mashes. Is there a test to see if it is spoiled or not? What other uses could I use it for?

Re: first single malt barley ferment
I got a yellowish low wine from running an all grain batch on a stripping run too. I was running it pretty hard though. I slowed down quite a bit and it cleared up a little. This might be normal. Everything was crystal clear on my spirit run. Hope this helps.

Re: My New Pot Still
Nice build. I went with a 3 inch column and I pack it with copper mesh on my spirit runs.

Re: Your opinion please
Thanks Jimbo - that helps. I'm not getting a harsh solvent smell doing this "next morning" test I mentioned in my original post. I'll let this play out and see how it goes in a few months.

Your opinion please
Question for everyone and wondering what opinions are: I distilled about 9.5 liters (from 70% corn and 30% malted barley) to come up with what is now in a 10L barrel for aging. It's my first bourbon run. I distilled this mix of mash recipe into low wines (3 batches) until I had enough to do a spirit...

Re: Corn mash + false bottom. Bad idea?
I just did a batch of cracked corn on my system. I have a continuous mash recirculating chugger pump system. I did not start the pump until starch conversion was complete and the mash was watery again. I used like 10 gal of water and 17 lbs of cracked corn. I don't know if this would work if I crush...

Re: Starsan accident
As a brewer and avid user of StarSan, we say, "Never fear the Foam". I would say my 5 gallon better bottles have at least an airlock full of StarSan in them just prior to racking the wort into them, whether its the 1st rack or 2nd. Never once have I had problem with it, and it has no taste.

Re: Direct Fired, Continuous Recirculation Wash??
Ah. Got what you're talking about now Prairiepiss. Well, at least I'll still be able to make a good wash with the brew setup. I'm going to shift my efforts to looking at going electric after the info posted here, plus it's just much safer. Sounds like this theory just isn't worth the headache and wo...

Re: Direct Fired, Continuous Recirculation Wash??
Thanks for all the posts here guys. I really appreciate the input. My own fault here, but I'm still probably not explaining the setup accurately for you though. Brendan: I'm talking about applying direct heat to the boiler, not heating wash away from the boiler/column. Prairiepiss: I think I underst...

Re: Direct Fired, Continuous Recirculation Wash??
My system is heated directly from a burner. It is not a RIMS setup. And yes, I can control the temperature of the wash during distillation, just like I control the temp of the mash tun for brewing. To be a little more specific here's how this is working on my brew rig: - wort travels from the mash t...

Direct Fired, Continuous Recirculation Wash??
Not sure if this idea is a good one or not - looking for some thoughts. My 15 gal brewing setup is a direct fired, continuous mash recirculation system. Temp is controlled by a Blichmann "Tower of Power" control module which sends a spark to ignite the burner and keep my mash at a constant...

Re: Howdy from Bama,
Hi Rick, I'm from Alabama too! Enterprise, but I live in Colorado now because I'm in the military. Well, I'm new to this forum as well but I've been a avid home brewer for the past 8 years. I think home brewing has provided me a "leg up" on this area because its pretty similar until you ge...

New to the forum
Hello all, I'm new to the forum. My name is Bob and here's a little about myself: - I live in Colorado Springs, CO for now. I'm in the US Navy and move a lot. - I've been a brewer for over 7 years and wanted to try something new. I really think I'm going to like distilling. - I want to focus primari...
