Re: First barrel ageing

I got one from here, one of few that have American oak in Europe.
https://barricasdemadera.com/

Took 3 months, their communication is shocking but the barrel is nice.

I've filled it with bourbon to do what you plan on doing, only difference is I'm doing Irish potstilled rather than scotch

Re: Pot run: how low and how slow?

Riser? I’ve got a 3 gallon Vexar still with thumper. Right from Amazon. Check it out. Get back with me. Plz I think my answer was quite detailed, how I perceive the stilling process anyways. At some point you'll just have to dig in and do some research and more importantly learn by doing. If runnin...

Yep, they are great, I use them in every mash.
To many times did I get crap conversation without it.

Cost is about 1€ per mash so well worth it in my opinion

Wow, that's some deal, delighted for ya!

Thumper looks on the small side for the boiler, maybe you can repousse your keg as the thumper.

Lovely patina on it, don't forget a cleaning run on it, who knows how long it's been sitting

Yeah, that's fair , I'll likely get more passive reflux than most other stills.

I'm to drunk to get I to a more elaborative answer so this is all you get

Re: Pot run: how low and how slow?

That's my findings since going back running the potty again. Used to smear like a bastard on my 1 inch potty. Now I run my plater as a potty, no coolant to the reflux coil. It's 3in at it most narrow section, before leibig but after keg. Wider column makes for slower spread allowing the heavier comp...

Re: Pot run: how low and how slow?

I have a 3 gallon vexar pot still. Thumper. Condenser. Etc. all from Amazon. Lol This time around I’ve turned my heat down a lil. Taking longer. But flavor is there. Honestly. I just picked up this hobby for 1st time in 20 years. I’m hooked again. I love the science of it all. On the other hand. 5 ...

Re: Any ideas for old Malted Barley?

I took a 3 year hiatus from stilling.
Had a variety of grains sitting in the shed for the duration, opened cracked oats and uncracked wheat and malt, some flaked corn too.

All bags was used up, the only thing that was affected was the weevils

You could turn copper, basically put it in a lathe and shape it.
But it's far harder to learn than basic soldering.
Reckon it would be a fairly rewarding hobby in itself

Just checking, you did do the clean and sac runs?

If not puke, could be crap that was not cleaned out.

Else I agree with SBB and bilgriss.
Puke and/or turbo will ruin a good run

Commercial distilleries all over the world charge their stills with low wines higher than 40%, nothing strange there

The 40% rule is only here on HD

I was waiting to do this forever but just made a false bottom instead. Now I don't have the need for a steam stripper. Now if you do alot of corn you would still benefit from a steam stripper, I don't so a non issue for me. I had two reasons for going with a false bottom 1 Space poor, just don't hav...

They are similar rules and penalties to what we had in New Zealand when I built my first still in the 1980s. That's why I built one that could be run once a year to make over a year's worth of spirit in a weekend, then could be broken down and spread around the property for the rest of the year. I ...

Actually, do you ferment on the grain?
Could be that the enzymes are still working on the corn so may keep going for a while yet

If it's still fermenting away I'd leave it alone, unless you have to/ want to run it now.

Looks like it's about done, reckon a day or two left max.

Re: Can you use Sikaflex 221 on a still?

Copper wire may work, it's a bit finicky. Cut a copper disk slightly larger than the hole, solder that on your drain and then solder the whole assembly over the hole. Using silver solder on the disk/ drain and normal leadfree on the hole will make it easier but it should all be doable with leadfree ...

Re: Single malt barley whiskry horrible taste

I've made loads of good single malt that's enjoyable after 6 months.

Trick is a plater and good cuts.

On a pot still the trick is good cuts and time.
Tails age out better than heads.

Time on oak helps, time in oak helps more.
