Re: buying a barrel?, My adventure and advice
A friend of mine purchased a barrel from 1000oaksbarrel.com, and for what he paid for it, I'm pretty impressed with it, especially for the price. He purchased a 3-liter with brass bands and a little wooden stand for something like $75. It had some weight to it too, and seemed pretty well made. He ha...

Re: More wood experimentation
It started with my cousin questioning how the naturally occurring sugars in the wood reacted after the wood has been charred and/or toasted, namely those in hard maple (aka: sugar maple), as we were working with hard maple at the time. So that brought up the question of "what would happen if we...

More wood experimentation
Decided to do a bit more experimentation with wood for aging. I looked around, and didn't see anything like what I had thought up, so I decided to run with it and see what happened. My idea was to do more to impart different flavors into the wood. Namely more caramel type flavors. My cousin and I we...

Re: Mashing mix up, see what comes out in the end!
After basically forgetting about this bucket for a while, I finally got to running it yesterday. It sat in my very cold shop after it finished fermenting for well over a month, and surprisingly, it was still good. Well, this turned out to be the best tasting mix-up I've ever had! This stuff is GOOD!...

Re: oak wine bottles for ageing
The bottles at Oakbottles.com start at $60 for a 355ml bottle, and $80 for a 750ml bottle. That price is outrageous if you ask me, especially for something so small. And as with any bottle, barrel or other "oaking/aging device", it's only going to be good for 3 or so fills before the oak i...

Re: New Shotgun for DAD Still
Went ahead and built it with four 1/2" tubes as that was what I had on hand. I should have the rest of my parts to finish up in a week or two. Can't wait! I'm pretty sure four 1/2" tubes in a 19" shotgun will do quite well on a CCVM. The CCVM's are an awesome design. I need to get pi...

Re: New Shotgun for DAD Still
I have my new column plumbed so water goes through the liebig and then into the reflux coil (3/8" corrugated SS gas line) and it seemed to work fine in the initial cleaning run. Haven't ran it since, but the sac run went very well.

My first car was a dark purple 1986 Trans-Am GTA, stick-shift 5-spd, built 355ci small block w/425whp/415tq and a NOS Big Shot plate nitrous system running a 250hp shot. (actual wheel hp on the bottle was 660/685tq) Ran a Gale Banks Tr-Y header system to 3" single exhaust, so loud you could he...

S-C, small wood lathe if you have access to one, how I make mine and it works well. Otherwise, hole-saw and router would work. You could even pattern rout them from scratch. I've been a woodworker for a long time, lots of ways to make wooden lids. As for whats going on in the barrel, I don't think e...

Re: Experiment to speed aging
Thanks for all the replies! Thecroweater, my jars have oak lids, and thus they are able to breathe in nearly the same way a barrel would. In my experience, jars with oak lids produce a much smoother whisky than do jars with normal lids, even if you open the normal jars every few days. I had thought ...

Re: 15 gal keg still w/ 5 gal thumper pics
Lots of ways to go about it. yup, now that I have an idea about how much water it uses I will play and learn. I also have a dual pass aluminium radiator out of the race car that I could use for cooling, never know what might get fabricated  That radiator would probably do pretty well with ...

Liebig it is, thanks for the info. I figure dump the hot water into an ice filled pail, transfer to holding tank when cooled and pump it through the liebig again, should work just fine :D Now my biggest problem remains where can I hide this shine so it can have time to age some. :econfuse...

Experiment to speed aging
As I understand it, part of the aging process comes from the temperature and barometric pressure changes that aging warehouses experience, both from the temp swings between day and night, as well as seasonal changes. That said, I have decided to try to speed up time, so to speak. I have a cabinet th...

@corene1. Nice work and hasps. Gives me ideas. Thanks. You are worrying too much about aesthetics and not enough about the important stuff.. I would respectfully refute that. Re: Copper on copper seal
I personally feel you are making something that can be very simple, into something very complicated while adding in the potential for problems one otherwise wouldn't encounter. If you want to join large diameter openings, buy Tri-Clamp flanges. They are available up to at least 12" in size, and...

Re: Cooling system brainstorming
I have been playing with a closed loop cooling system lately, as my usual system isn't viable during winter months (250-gallon water tank behind my shop). I went to a junk yard and scavenged 2 A/C condenser units (we will call them radiators for clarity purposes) out of junk cars that use 3/8" ...

After deciding on the Crankandstein 2D, I spoke with my father this morning. He is a machinist and we have been working on/talking about building a grain mill for a while now, he's just slow to get motivated. Finally, after 5 months of hounding him, we are going to go to the machine shop this weeken...

Re: Which Grain Mill? Upgrading to roller mill
Thanks, much appreciated. I know about the 3-roller and corn, but I've got my Corona that grinds corn like no tomorrow. And it has a huge hopper that holds 35lbs of corn, so it works pretty well for that. I wish I could get a side-by-side comparison of the Captain Crush and the Crankandstein 2D and ...

Which Grain Mill? Upgrading to roller mill
I've decided it's time to upgrade from my Corona type mill to something a bit nicer. This is something I want to buy once and never have to worry about replacing. However, I'm still working with a budget and would like to keep cost under $300, though I can push that a bit if needed. Mills considered...

Dart block based 363ci stroker with twin turbo set-up, which should be good for 1000+hp at the wheels. At 2850lbs, it should go pretty good with 1000+hp under the hood. umm...ya... that'll get the job done. watched one of those stroked dart t/t's go down the track sub 10...touted at 1600hp. yee haw...

Re: Small build starter
I don't think you guys realize exactly what I'm implying. The column height scales somewhat to the overall size of the still. It doesn't need to be 16' tall to have an effect. My tests were with columns 6", 16", 24", 32" and finally 40", and using a charge from a single wash...

Re: cheap source for oak spirals
find a local wood supplier, call and ask if they have any American White Oak boards for sale. They stuff isn't overly expensive, I think I just paid like $6 or$8 per board foot for 1" thick quarter sawn furniture grade stuff (a board foot is equivalent to 12" x 12" x 1" thick). If...

Re: Small build starter
A little bit of info on column height, as it does have a bit of an effect on the flavor of your product. If you research the stills used by Scotch whisky distillers, you will see they design their stills and lyne arms with certain features and dimensions to help them achieve the quality, character a...

Odin, I have sprouted, smoked and dried my own barley a few times now, and it's not all that difficult. I bought Scottish Peat to use for smoking, and it seemed to work well. I've found it helpful to research into the whiskies I like, grain bills, fermentation techniques, stilling methods, how they are matured, etc. While I don't always try to duplicate the results, I use them as a guide to help me get to where I want to be.
