My element did the same thing. Perfectly normal. No need to clean the inside after a water run and a sac run.

Re: White film on top of fermenting mash
That would make sense. It only happend in one fermenter. The one that I pulled the top off every day to check SG. Probably at the end of the ferment it slowed down and couldn't overcome the o2.

Re: White film on top of fermenting mash
Exactly like that Greggn. It was at the very end of my ferment. I read a lot of threads on lactic. Most of them said it happened at the beginning. I ran it as soon as it developed.

Back from a long break
Hello all, I've been offline for a great while and thought I would stop by and reintroduce myself. It's been so long that I forgot my password and had to apply for a new one. Good to see the site is still up and running. Today I'm brewing up a batch of Twinrivers bourbon. Happy sipping!!!

Seems like every time I meet at a bar with friends and really having a craving for a glass of good whiskey, I am always disappointed by the usual bar stock of crown, Jack Daniels, dewars, and V.O. So I just down a few beers and have to wait until I get home for a good night cap.

Re: milling cracked corn
Cracked corn will work just fine. Get your strike water good and hot. I go around 190F. The add the corn and stir with a drill and paddle mixer for a while. It will totally gelatinize.

Get a 20 gallon Rubbermaid Brute from tractor supply. They are food grade and you can probably double your batch and get 2 runs out of it.

Dan, sorry it took so long to get back. I quit using it because cracked corn is way cheaper here and I get the same results.

Humbledore, they are stainless long ferrules. I laid out the fish mouth on a piece of rubber and made a template. Then put them carefully in a vice and cut with a portaband. After they were all cut I put a 4 1/2" grinder in the vice with a flapper sanding disc on it and custom tuned each one to...

Re: UJssm second ferment question
Go to the home brew store and get yourself a hydrometer. My mash starts at around 1.058 and ends around 1.0 or a little less. I set the dinger at 1.0 (figure of speech) It's just that easy. I check every two days. If it hasn't moved then it stalled. If it's moved, leave it alone. You will hear stori...

Re: whiskey turned cloudy, why?
I didn't check it but with 15 gallons of 8% mash and 5 gallons of feints I can't believe it would be all that high. I didn't run it through my tower. Just the good old pot/ thumper set up. There are so many variables here it totally has my head spinning.

Re: whiskey turned cloudy, why?
I keep a 5 gallon carboy that I dump heads and tails in. After about a year it finally filled up. Made 15 gallons of mash and topped off my pot with the whole 5 gallons of feints. It was a different kind of run. After cutting foreshots and heads (a lot of heads) I got into the hearts at 130 proof. U...

Welcome aboard. I recommend Uncle Jessie's Simple Sourmash Meathod for all new beginners. You will find it in the tried and true recipes section. Are you using city water? What kind of yeast? What is your PH? Did you hydrate your yeast?? I use a yeast bomb and it never fails. pulling off a good ferm...

Re: Looking to build a 3 inch 5 Plate Still
You are entirely overthinking these things. i think 3" will work but I can't tell you for sure. I would use that 3" for your condenser and start scouring the scrap yards for a piece of 4" about 4 feet long. You won't be disappointed especially if you upgrade to a larger pot or larger ...

I used it a lot in the beginning with smaller batches. Just rack it off through a tight strainer or cheese cloth when you load up your pot. You won't be disappointed it makes a good drink

316 will not react to a magnet. 304 will sometimes have a slight reaction. 302 and lower grades will usually stick

Re: My first still...from eBay...should I regret it?
Quick way to check if your hardware is stainless. Check it with a magnet. A magnet won't stick to stainless. Unless it is a poor grade like 302 or nickle plated steel. If the fasteners are in the vapor path than I would make them stainless.
