Re: Making Starter vs fermenting - what's the difference?
Your starter medium should be similar to the target fermentables as well. A starter fed on pure sugar may be reluctant to switch to maltose / maltotriose.

Re: Powdered blackstrap molasses
Just finished some fermentation tests with the Bulk Foods dried molasses. One thing they don't tell you on the website - the product is 25% maltodextrin. This makes for a piss-poor yield. Even after a healthy 2 week ferment, it only went from 1.060 SG to 1.030 FG - about 4% ABV. Bulk Foods dried mol...

Have you read Darek Bell's (Corsair Distillery) Alt Whiskeys? Does a good job of covering alternative grains, hopped whiskeys, etc.

Never had anyone ask if my journey was Moonshiners inspired, but I'd hazard 2/3 of the folks I tell I'm opening a craft distillery respond with "Oooh, what kind of beers will you make?"

Re: Acetone. Methanol and other bad stuff - A Couple Questio
Actually, sugar washes will produce less volatiles, target potential %ABV taken into consideration... All grains produce more methanol, etc., than sugar washes even at lower potential %ABV... You can't get out what wasn't in there in the first place... True, but both are effectively zero com...

How about a 3" sleeve (with appropriate reducers to fit the tower exterior) and pack the tower with copper mesh in the sleeved area? Easily get 100% reflux this way.

Revenoor stills can also be gas fired according to their site. Revenoor confirmed that. But did Revenoor knew that instead of one 40 kW burner, four 40 kW burners were installed? Stating that the manufacturer approved gas firing is not the same as stating that the manufacturer approved quadrupling ...

Re: moonshine distillery explodes today
They sure wanted to heat up faster. The still was bought with 4 electric heating elements. A similar still from the maker is rated 40 kW. The owner quadrupled the firepower with 4 burners to 160 kW. Revenoor is on record as approving this direct fire installation. The electric elements were not wir...

Re: moonshine distillery explodes today
The still was shipped with a pressure relief valve , there is no argument about that. What I'm wondering is why did the distillery modify the still? A tube was added to the vent side of the pressure relief valve. I assume the tube was to move the steam away from the still in the event the valve ope...

Re: moonshine distillery explodes today
I recon it's quite simple really. but correct me if I am wrong There are Two vents built into them stills, the PRV + the product take off point or collection tube, so , if the PRV pops, and or if product is being collected from the still, you do not have any sort of excess pressure build up in that...

Re: moonshine distillery explodes today

Re: moonshine distillery explodes today
The still has been in use for some time, it's not a new! still, with no reported problems to the manufacturer, so really the 150 PSI PRV don't really have a bearing on what's happened, because the still was being monitored by the operative :eh:, well, but was it :shh: Not sure I fully understand wh...

Re: moonshine distillery explodes today
So my understanding was that a 150 psi PRV was on the still at the time of the explosion. Is that not correct? That's what the report said. If someone sold you a still and the specs said 150 PSI PRV, would you question it? And even if they didn't disclose and said still arrived with a 150 PSI valve...

The most obvious one I'm sure you know if you worked in a distillery - reporting. There are a couple really good solutions on the market but even the cheapest - Whiskey Systems - is $350/mo. That's a pretty steep expense for a startup.

Looks like the beginnings of a lacto infection, you lucky dog. Let it roll till the cap falls.
While lacto is good, I'm not a fan of US-05 because it's a slow starter. I've had butyric unpleasantness because of 05 in the past.
