Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

My kids spend all their time in the basement, so every few weeks during the summer I put them out to soak up some sun so they age better. Badmo, it was really great seeing you a few weeks back. D man said he really had a good time hanging out with you too. Let’s do it again soon. Otis It's fun to s...

Here is a thread on my design of bain marie barrels:

Worth a look, folks. The hole-saw method could be an easier way for folks to get started with this general concept.

Re: Bain Marie Micro-barrels (aka my BadMo-eque bain marie barrel design)

I love it!

Do you like to age your spirits with the barrels standing on their heads, so to speak? Or horizontal as I do?

Also, how thick do you like the heads to be, when you are using your virgin weathered oak?

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

For what it’s worth, I don’t have any problem with discussing Clearmoon247’s barrels in this thread. I think this style of aging can be accomplished just as well by his method as by mine, without qualification. Everyone benefits when we share new ideas and new approaches.

Re: Speed of stripping & speed of spirit runs

Renewed interest in an ancient thread I was deeply involved in? That’s catnip for me. :) I’ll summarize what I learned: if ABV readings are a proxy measurement for “separation” (and I believe they are), then empirically the “separation” effect of running super slowly on a pot still on a spirit run i...

Any chance of just selling the pre-made barrel heads? Save on freight and time sourcing and weathering the oak.. I would be interested in that because I live in Australia and shipping would be easier. Less bulky. I love the idea of these barrels but would not be able to make them. I am not skilled ...

So this is charred, ya? Will it become an option for purchase in your shop??? :D Duck I just put together 14 barrels today, crossing the “100” line. They’re all filled with water. I’m on vacation this weekend, but when I get back those barrels will have proven tight and they’ll be ready to go! All ...

Salty, my research leads me to think that wax use is extensive in cooperage. “ A natural wax is then put between the joints to prevent minor leaks from happening in the first 10 minutes that whisky is put in the barrel before the wood has a chance to swell.” from https://vinepair.com/articles/bourbo...

Re: Spirit run math

I know I’m late to this party, but I have a couple of suggestions for wpkluck that might help: 1. You should shorten your spirit run times by running them at high power. I know that it is basically orthodoxy that spirit runs have to be run slower on a pot still, but I am a die-hard heretic. My resea...

News: I think I am going to scrap the circle-cutting jig. That thing is awesome when it’s set up juuuuuust right on granddad’s old bandsaw. Which it never is. The blade deflects, gets bogged down, I say bad words, it’s ugly. I’ve decided to just freehand a “circle” on a compass line, and do all of t...

It looks like this is one of those questions where you will be given different answers from different people. In homebrewing, when you start to worry about the minutiae of recipe or technique, you can take comfort in the knowledge that no matter what, it’s going to turn out “beer” one way or the oth...

How long should the oak be seasoned and should it be out in full weather rain etc or partially shielded? Stave mills put their wood out in giant yards and just let it sit there, in the weather, for years. My opinion is that oak should have as long as you can stand to wait. A rainy season with the o...

Ha! I've got a sweet hook up on once used Barrel Mill 5 gallon barrels from the local distillery for $50 a peice. That's All Great information! Twisted Brick and I have chatted a good bit about making a couple of these.
