Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

I hear you, Saltbush. But I am very reluctant to engage in commercial talk in this thread, my friend. Our hosts would probably disapprove, and I prefer to keep the focus here on the making of and the use of these barrels. I hope that’s understandable.

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

Hey, you folks ever listen to podcasts? I had a wonderful conversation with Alan Bishop (Spirits of French Lick, etc.) and Christi Atkinson on “Distillers Talk” which was just published. Alan is a fantastic resource for home distillers on his YouTube channel, the One Piece at a Time Distilling Insti...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

There's a map on his website with pins for every barrel number. Neat! Looks to me like a neighbor got one from the same batch I did! I just didn't see it on mobile. This might be a seriously half-baked idea, but if you email me your barrel # and the barrel # of the one near, I can email the other f...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

When making mine I got a perfectly adequate fit by eye. Marked. Circle with a compas and bansawed it out carefully then sanded to the line with a spacer under one end to provide the taper. Because the stainless has some give and the head swells anyway I was able to get a watertight seal . Jigs are ...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

Much better using the static jig and lifting the saw very slowly. 11/10 wouldn't recommend this method. Band saw all the way for me from now on. 10 min on a band saw vs forever with this method for me. I agree folks. The table saw method can work but the risks are really huge. I used the table saw ...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

So after reading this thread until my eyes bled. And then I read even more, I decided to take the plunge on making my own while I wait until one becomes available to buy. So I have now two 6qt baine Marie’s, spigots for both and a used bourbon barrel head on the way. Not to mention a couple of new ...

The collection grows! That’s the stuff! It’s a fine start. I can’t wait to see your collection grow! Shot of the vevor CNC too if anyone curious: I’m curious! (Double) cope tongue and groove. AKA shaker rail and stile. Search for infinity 83-034, should give you the pattern numbers so you can talk to someone about the double sided version. That's getting close! Thanks for your suggestion. I'll probably have to just work the phones and emails with the sha...

I have a question for all of you!

What is the specific, technical name of the set of tongue and groove shaper bits which cut this profile, used often by cooperages for joining head staves?

Hey, this should be fun! 160 used bourbon barrel heads arrived a few days ago. I'm still playing around with an efficient and successful workflow, but initial tests have been promising. I'll try to make a video dealing with the different challenges of using this wood source in the coming weeks. IMG_...

Got my first badmo barrel loaded up with apple brandy from the 2021 harvest. Badmo, it is a thing of beauty. I'm going to do some whiskey this winter and load another. After about 6 months visiting the local woodworking club on a Saturday and knee surgery sprinkled in, I've finally finished my first BM barrel. Wow!! I got #484 in June, so you've really ramped it up. It is filled with a triple distilled bourbon. Perfect! I've also made 4 BMOBs myself, 3 M3 and 1 M0. The M0 is filled with Apple Brandy, and the other 3 are for my next bourbon. I've also 'traded' for another 2"x10"x12" white o...

Otis and Ben, I had to chuckle a little inside at that video. You two look like you could be related. I need to get down there and see you two on one of my trips into Oregon. Right know I am only doing one size, the 8.25 qt Bain Marie insert. But it’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future. :)

@Badmotivator Thanks for the barrel. It is top notch construction. I really like the spigot. No leak from that guy! Have you thought of grinding a small flat on the lower rim so it doesn't roll around? I set mine on a wooden holder from a old wooden barrel I had. I will sure like the "no leaks...
