Re: Appriccot & Rhubarb ?

Not having experience with apricots, I'd freeze, thaw and chop em with a sharpened motor mixer. I think the stones float, if so skim em off the top. At this point, check the SG of a clean (particulate free) sample. From there either dilute down with water or bump the SG up with white grape juice co...

Re: Will this work for a condenser on a CCVM?

The winding is awfully tight.....but it may work. Try it and see. When you get to the end of the run you will know. If you have any vapor from the top.....you will know it is inefficient. Time to go with gas tube which is very efficient.

My first thoughts are......we have become so politically correct we can't even speak the truth anymore. I miss the days of Rad and roses.
I guess I was on vacation when glass was voted in. Oops, just broke my dang ABV meter again.

You got the green light from Dad, so go fer it. Looks like mine except for the condensor ( I have a liebig), and the height. I personally don't think you need that much height to accomplish good results. I easily pull 95% ABV from 35% low wines with just 30" of 2" packed column with copper...

Re: My first run

40% is a bit low for a typical pot still. I assume that's what you have since you didn't specify. You could expect around 50 to 60% to be average, especially with a 9% ABV wash.....or wine. I would toss the thermometer or a least cover it up......you won't need it to run a pot still. Just adjust the...

Re: Is homemade hootch better ?

The simple answer is yes. But the reality is, even the purest form of ethanol is poison. So, if consumed in enough quantity, it can leave you feeling like crap. But, in moderation it can be a most pleasant experience, which I think is what most of us are after. Of course, there are those who disagre...

Re: Treating a barrel while aging

Thanks for the read. The only thing I couldn't find out is why you should top a small sized barrel up. I thought that the headspace was responsible for the desired level of oxidation and taste. Mainly it is just to keep your barrel from drying out at the empty area. If you wanna turn your barrel on...

+1 Still_stirrin. Once it reached 100 proof, we ended the run. Did we end the run too soon? There is a shit ton of reading on this forum so I KNOW I could have overlooked something. Yes, you ended the run too soon for a pot still. Most of us run down to at least 20% ABV for that kind of wash...

You might just add water to 30 % ABV and re-run it. It's worth a try. That subtle off taste may diminish enough to be good.

For what it's worth, I filled a 5 gal barrel in Aug 2016 with Hook Rum and couldn't keep my hands off it. I slowly over the past 7 months used up most of it and finally emptied the remaining gallon of it just a couple weeks ago to make room for some Panela rum. It is now full again and hopefully, I ...

Re: My First Run, sweetfeed.

Pretty typical that your distillate will be harsh right off the still. Air it out for 24 to 48 hrs and then let it sit for 3 months or put on oak and it may change and smooth out. Make your cuts according to Kiwi stillers "guide to cuts" on this forum. If you rerun it, it may clean up some...
