Just picked up a cheapy cooker from Menard's today. The regulator has a battery powered timer that needs to be reset every 15 min or it will flame out.

Brewed 2.5 gallons of this tonight. Replaced 1 qt of pressed cider with bottled black cherry juice. Us-05 yeast and calypso hops. See what 2 weeks will bring.

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Airlock yes. Clear goo on the surface however the whole thing is thick. I use 5 gallon HDPE buckets to ferment in.

I recently got a bottle of Star San and set up some in a squirt bottle also.

Not out much on on one bucket full of birdwatchers so think I'll dump it and chalk it up as lesson learned.

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Thanks NZChris sounds good. Was just over thinking as I was reading other posts. I have better means to sterilize now also. I have a bucket next to that one just fine that I did not add anything to it.

Stockpot boiler so I'll bring it up to temp a little slow and hope not to burn the goo.

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Made this up by the numbers scaled down to 5 gals. Used EC-1118 cause its cooler now where I'm at. Slow slow action from the airlock. 2nd week added a crushed oyster shell bomb (thin cotton cloth with a palm full of crushed shells hung a small string through the airlock hole). 1 week later added nut...

Re: Hard Cider

You want less dry, try using a different yeast like Nottingham or some use ale yeasts. And crash it or use additives to halt the yeast when its how you like it. I've read where some calculate the max ABV of the yeast and OG so the yeast die out before the all the sugar is consumed.

Re: Hard Cider

Rack it, let it settle out and maybe rack it again. Helps keep it from being too dry if it not already. Cold crash it if your happy with the SG. Longer you can let it sit the better.

I noticed that also touring bourbon distilleries. They use giant wooden open top vessels to ferment. I have a pic somewhere I will post if I can find it. It was really cool watching the yeast bubbles hit the surface and move to the center.

Re: When you buy, what do you buy, and is it as good as your

Found a bottle of Wild Turkey 81 proof. I think it has a bit more body and much better flavor than 101. Few years back did the Bourbon Trail Bardtown Kentucky with my father when it was 5 Distilleries long. Woodford Reserve was the only one that charged for a tour at the time. We did not do that tou...

Re: cleaning used glass bottles

If its college town they are most likely this year's party fodder. I'd say that them as used beer bottles and make sure the threads and caps get a good wash. Outside may want to mist down with a disinfectant. A case of mono or something might be hanging and keep labels nice.

Re: Leftover Low Wines- uses?

Whether stripping run or spirit run makes no difference... It's more of a personal preference thing... That being said, backset from a neutral spirits run through a reflux column can be pretty nasty... I, personally, don't use backset because my primary goal is neutral spirits... Yep in neutral spi...

Got this one at the Four Roses Distillery with my pops on the tour a few years back. The Four Roses etched in the center go clear to red when cold.

OK so no more using the android for posting pics.

That's what I call it. It's just I'm new to the Midwest and never seen corn grow 8 feet tall and 3 inches apart. They spray roundup on it, it can flood or no rain for weeks at a time and it still makes ears just the same.
