Re: UJSSM 1st gen to second gen question.

Ya I think if this turns out well I’m going to triple my fermentor volume. I’m glad I did it this way for the first time so I can learn from both running the still and fermenting the wash but I haven’t yet tried any spirits of my own and I’m looking forward to tasting this final product white and ag...

Re: UJSSM 1st gen to second gen question.

Went great again today. Second gen stripping run done! One more gen and I’ll do a spirit run! I’ll let ya know how it goes. I currently have 14 liters of around 36% low wines. Should have another 8 or so after next run. 22 liters worth doing a spirit run or do you guys think I should do another batc...

Re: Reflux as pot?

Thanks for all the feedback! Yes 50litre boiler lol. And I coolers the low wines before measuring abv as I was aware that 110 was too hot. My assumption was that cooler is better for the condenser. Is this incorrect? I filled a keg with cold water then circulated that with small pump. I did not it h...

Re: Reflux as pot?

So I did my first stripping run! Just thought I’d post some of my notes I took here and if someone has some thoughts or recommendations I’m thankful for it. So I had a wash of ujssm wash( litres of fluid. ) from that I filtered 24 litres into 50 gallon boiler seen above. I kept and discarded the fir...

Re: UJSSM 1st gen to second gen question.

Ok I think I’ll try that. Won’t need any additional yeast most likely right? Still Plenty mixed in with 1st gen corn I assume? Also looks like fermentation stopped today. I didn’t do sg test at start or end as I didn’t have one. But my “proof trailles “ hydrometer arrived today. It’s hard to use on ...

Re: UJSSM 1st gen to second gen question.

Should I split the old corn from first generation as well? Then top up each of two washes with new corn to meet recipe requirements?

UJSSM 1st gen to second gen question.

Hello all, Just about to do a stripping run on first gen UJSSM and got myself thinking. Rather than space out 2nd and third gen to get enough volume for a spirit run from low wines is there a way I could add a second fermentor with backset from first gen in both to essential get twice the volume of ...

Re: Reflux as pot?

Edited to add: The vapor tube to your product condenser may be adequately sized if you’re running a high reflux run. But, if you’re trying to run this stillhead as a potstill, your throughput (vapor production rate) will be limited by that small vapor tube. A larger condenser with a larger vapor tu...

Reflux as pot?

Thanks guys. Just add the copper in vapor path with perforated plate or just on its own? Don’t want it dropping into boiler.

Re: Reflux as pot?

It’s a old fashion concentric jacketed CM style reflux condenser. As you show, omitting the column and packing and not cooling the RC, you’ll have a basic potstill. So, it’ll work as you’ve desired for a whiskey or full flavored run. Thanks for the feedback I assume my picture showed up then? I see...

Reflux as pot?

Hey there have a reflux column still that I’m hoping to use as pot still for a batch of whisky in the near future. I’m curious if I’m better off just removing the packing from the column and not using cooling at top of head or removing column entirely and just condensing in condenser. Hers a pic of ...

Re: So theres no "best" still...

it really is quite amazing how much a picture can help. thanks all for feedback, I think i will go ahead with a dad300 type build, love the simplicity. Gotta figure out length and width and such still but I've seen a pile of that sort of info around. thanks guys.

Re: So theres no "best" still...

thanks for all the responses, I'm trying to find a solid thread with one of "dad300" designs, seen some threads that have comments on them but having a hard time nailing down a build plan. anyone have the link?
thanks again all.

Re: So theres no "best" still...

ok, feeling a little more confused than before. Im just a little daft i suppose. it was my understanding that you wanted as neutral a spirit as possible for gin. also I had thought that to obtain a nice neutral spirit in the most time and energy efficient manner was the use of a reflux column. thank...

So theres no "best" still...

hello all, very new to the forum but I have read through the spoon feeding, as well as some info on bokah stills, vm vs lm and flute stills. my question is this, if you were just starting stilling. and you knew you wanted to make mostly gin, and you wanted to make a goodly amount of it. what type of...

Re: Brand Spanking new

Thanks so much guys. Got a lead on a keg hope to pick it up in the next couple days. Haven't made anything drinkable yet. Only ran a bit of water through my first still that I will now disassemble. I'm looking at the Liebig condenser just have to get a soldering kit with some food safe solder. I do ...

Re: Brand Spanking new

Thanks for the feedback. I will start looking for a keg. I assume I could still use the same worm condenser I already built. But I'm curious if you were starting over what condenser would you build?
Thanks for everything guys. I'll get this.

Re: Brand Spanking new

unfortunately my pressure cooker is indeed aluminum. it does not have any rubber gaskets though, and is freaking huge. I have read mixed thoughts on aluminium use for distilling. Im curious if it is universally accepted as by no means an acceptable substance. please don't apologize for busting chops...
