Re: Sacrificial run
I always take off 150 ml of fores and 200 ml heads, I collect most of the tails but when it starts tasting bad I stop the run. I just add the 200 ml of heads to the next run each time. My UJSM is really good third through fifth run. After that I usually start over cause the ph in the mash gets prett...

Re: Sacrificial run
I run my 2" vm packed with 6 copper scrubbers. Reason is my still is 316 stainless. So far I have only run with 1, 2' column section. My reflux condenser is a 1/4" double helix, made of copper. I close the 1" valve to compress the fores and again to compress the heads. once I'm in the...

Yeah, That's what this site is all about. Safety is a big deal around here and when we see something not right we try and help out. I have some of my own threads where people have told me things I didn't want to hear. You just have to learn as you go and not take it personal. Other than that, Welcom...

Re: My first still!
plus one to what they said, basically you have a really good example of how not to build a still. The boiler is aluminum and not a safe material to use with high proof alcohol. The gasket in that pressure cooker rubber, again not what you want to have in contact with high proof alcohol. Not to menti...

Re: My new pot build
What ss said. Repurpose existing parts. Best part of this build is that I can cap off where the reducer goes with a triclamp cap (or even a sight glass) and add some more pipe and build a reflux column. Looking forward to running this. I like the idea of using it for a gin still, or infused fruit like Apple, or blackberry. I would play with it for sure.

Its looking good, but if your going to be firing this thing with propane your product condenser should be a lil farther from your heat source.
Other than that, its looking good.

Re: Welding my ss ferrule to copper pipe
I'm a pipe welder and I tig weld stainless everyday. I have not welded stainless to copper although I'm aware they have similar melting points and it can be done. I wasn't aware that the ferrule slipped inside of the pipe. For that application soldering would be a better technique. Anytime you are w...

Sounds like to me he wants to use a gin basket and maybe add fruit for flavor. At least that's what I would do.

Re: Welding my ss ferrule to copper pipe
If anything make sure they purge the pipe with argon, otherwise you may get some sugaring on the inside of your pipe.
Other then that they should know how to weld it.

Yeah, what Bigbob said, You plan on re using your yeast don't you? I usually add another gallon or 2 of water after I siphon to the grain bed. later add about 2 gallons of dunder sugar, more water and go again!

.....6. VMs have their own challenges - like you can blow them up if your heat input overwhelms your cooler during equilibriation and you don't have a safety valve built in. Or implode the column if you forget to open it at the end of the run when you turn the heat off...Kifi @ Kifi, All the Vapor ...

Re: Very small scale very high purity?
Another point would be you wouldn't want to run a mash that has hops in it. I have made beer for years and my suggestion is to use proven recipes and sanitize everything. I have had a few dumpers in my day and it happens. Just start over with clean and sanitized equipment and all new ingredients. Go...

I would stick to making beer, Sounds like to me you have a long road of learning to do in just the beer making alone. You just need to use a sanitizer such as starsan for what your wanting to do.

Re: Reflux still opinions
I have only run my 2" vm but I have learned a ton about reflux ratios. My thoughts is that you can build a better still then any of the ones you listed. My 2" vm can take off a liter of 86% for a 6 1/2 gallon charge in about 2 1/2 hours. That's including removing fores and heads. From star...
