Re: Rule #8
I think we should think bigger than these hacks. There are basic shapes. 4” ID tri clamps being the biggest and most used. We should get research conducted that proves silicone is bad. Then with this research we should approach the big boys like stilldragon to help fund some additional research into...

Rule #8
Hey guys. I posted a pic which contained a silicone hose at the outlet. Initially i reposted because the rules stated plastic, and thought explaining that it was silicone would help clarify. It dit not, I got warned, and I complied. Replaced the line with a glass jar for the image. I’m happy to acce...

Mod that edited my post. It was medical grade silicone, not plastic. Silicone = inert. https://afrimedics.co.za/product/silicone-tube-for-askir-c30-surgical-suction/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow https://www.forbes.com/sites/kateharrison/2015/06/1...

My collection jar sita at 50%
Once the distillate reached 30% it tasted like nothing. That is where i killed it.

Re: Still mods.
The reason I want to reduce it is because the abv is still to high. On a run with the full 3kw it still comes out at 70%. This is what I’d expect as the “high proof” for the start of a spirit run from a potstill. But, the purity will decline throughout the run from there. ...On a proper pot still i...

The reason I want to reduce it is because the abv is still to high. On a run with the full 3kw it still comes out at 70%. On a proper pot still i should be getting 35-40% I only make brandy and “mampoer”, so getting all the flavour is what it is about. I wanted to do 2 runs, but with the final resul...

Does pot stills have any fixed formulas? I got this column still I want to modify. 1.5m column, going up, and 1.5m liebig going down. 2 inch thick. Even at 3kw , the liebig never heats up. There is no reflux besides the little that happens due to the 1.5m column. The idea is to reduce the primary co...

Re: Cream liqueurs
I think I’m going to try replacing the nestle evaporated milk from my recipe with half and half and see that how goes.
Might not get to something with long shelf life.

Re: Cream liqueurs
How long does it last with fresh cream?
The alcohol should keep bugs from spoiling it, but might need stabilizer to prevent the cream from changing ph?(aka going sour)

Cream liqueurs
Has any of you guys tried making cream liqueurs? I tried the old recipe of sweetened condensed milk and nestle evaporated milk, but added emulsifier to bind the cream base with the alcohol so that no separation occurs. The taste is almost there, but not quite. Texture is way off! Any one tried a rec...

Yes , until I ran away to Greece ! retired here in Crete , so many grapevines , mulberries, figs ,apricots .Really spoilt for choice on what to do next .Working on Rum and Whiskey now , did awesome Gins , all from a modest pot still. Figs would be awesome to try. It’s on my todo list. Unfortunately,...

You could even colour it and call it Amarula cream , my wifes favourite tipple! I’s doing something like that. Got emulsifier, and going to mix 1 tin evaporated milk, 1 tin sweetened condensed milk, and marula distillate to 25% total abv. Should end up with something very close to the real thing. W...

Going cloudy when diluting
So I did my cuts a bit different. I started in the middle and moved outwards. I’ve got 4.5L of seriously premium cuts with tons of flavour, and smooth as a baby’s bottom. Does not go cloudy at all. Next, i will dilute the rest, then filter it. Once it stops going milky, i will blend it with the good...

Just an update:
Did a sample in the middle, and it was crystal clear even after diluting with tap water. Just a spoon full in 2 spoons of water.

I did a stripping run, then a very very slow spirit run. 6 hours on 20L. I did max reflux most of the time. What did you use for your spirit run, pot still or what setup for refluxing.. It is a 4” column still. For the stripping run, i removed all the packing, and left the reflux tap wide open, and...

Hey guys. I did a stripping run, then a very very slow spirit run. 6 hours on 20L. I caught distillate from 88% all the way down to 60% 24 x 350ml jars from the spirit run. I did max reflux most of the time. So as a test, i added about an ounce or 30ml to a glass of sprite and ice to test my hard wo...

Re: Will it send me blind ?
Should I heat the fruit before fermentation to kill the nasties? To what temperature?
At this point it seems like i’m hijacking if it is not about methanol creation. Will start new thread if op insists.
I’m really excited to try a catawba brandy this year.

Re: Will it send me blind ?
I once made a red wine from catawba grapes. Used lalvin to ferment. Something in that process created so much other alcohols (non ethanol) that it was undrinkable. I kid you not, when you opened the bottle it smelled like nail polish remover. Catawba has a strong smell. Think grape jelly. It was com...

Re: Not home distilled, but
I always discourage the use of ice with whisky as IMO it kills the taste and aroma. If 115 proof it is too strong for you, just add a few drops of ambient temperature water until you are confortable with the proof and sip it that way  [OT mode on] still_stirring it is nice to read you agai...

Re: 2006 Orange Marmalade Wash
With the risk of all of the above, what about just making a mash with oranges, peal and all? The idea of a bitter sweet drink appeals to me. However, i try and avoid risk. The marula brandy I make is now a concern. Marula is also very high in pectine. In South Africa it is often used to make jelly f...

Looking forward to hearing your results :) What recipe are you using ? I use an old family recipe for marula wine. Marula. I was the 1st one to take that recipe and distill it. Had a sample the other day from this run, and it was kind of epic. Slight yeast aftertaste. Hoping it will dissipate, with...
