Re: Fathers Day

Bman you are seeing the same fine day I am. Different view though. I have many fond memories of times spent on the Hood Canal. Can't begin to count the bushels of oysters and clams I've harvested and enjoyed from its shores. Still am. Marion berrie are out. Think I'll be collecting enough to try a c...

Fathers Day

Its a Sunday and beautiful out. Woke up to the bird sounds outside my window instead of the alarm clock. Thats good enough for Fathers Day for me. Last night to remember my dad, my son and I went through my dads foot locker. Think Ill shave today with the Gillette safety razor we rediscovered in it....

Re: Just getting started in Colorado

Yup, that's a pretty short Liebig. Looks like about 12" between the water connections. Might be fine for a slow spirit run but you'd be much more satisfied with a much longer Liebig for stripping runs. I have a very similar Liebig but about 26" between water connections. I can strip about ...

92 in Seattle today. I did a spirit run of DWWG a couple of days ago. I love ginger and didn't have any vodka or neutral so made this with a 79% ABV cut of DWWG. Otherwise kept to Jimbo's recipe except used only one cup of sugar. Having it straight on ice now - very refreshing. I expect it will be v...

Never had much luck salvaging my bad home brewed beer batches by distilling. The hops always come through. Welcome to HD.

Welcome to HD. When you get the chance please share your recipe for the Manpoer. I have a lot of fruit around here that Id like to do something with this summer before it all goes to the birds and raccoons. I hear Manpoer also makes good mosquito repellant.

Re: Is this solder ok to use?

I too didn't want to pay close to $50 US to buy Stay-Brite 8 plus the cost of Harris flux. Instead I just bought a Harris Stay-Brite kit for about $12. It doesn't have quite the percentage of silver as Stay-Brite 8 but it's very close. The kit provided enough solder and flux to solder two stainless ...

Re: Hello from New York

Your condenser should be fine. Your boiler is only slightly smaller than mine and liebig condenser approximately the same dimensions as mine except I have a 3/4" outer tube. I easily can run at 2400 watts without over running the condenser. How big is your heater?

This is a great place to learn our craft. I am amazed how improved my product is since discovering this forum and learning from its members. I still have lots of learning to do and am looking forward to it. Welcome from another western WA member. North side of the ship canal myself.

Re: From Washington State

I've been more than a bit vague as to where I'm located but want to make sure I'm in the count as a Washington State member. More specifically, nearby the Ballard Locks. Great things are happening with craft and hobby distillation here and throughout the NW. Very welcome to another new WA member.

A second generation UJ. Ready to strip on Saturday. Also will be putting a level switch in my pot still boiler on Sunday though Superbowl may interfer. I am also experimenting with some cracked corn infused in some spirit run sugar wash aging on charred bourbon barrel 62% ABV.

Re: Electric keg build

Mad, dont know if JB is conductive. If you dont get continuity between the kettle and the ground you should add a ground conductor wire screwed to the kettle base and the ground post at the junction box. A safety thing. Continuity is an easy thing to check with a really cheap multi meter. Forgive me...

Mad, not clear to me from your photo. Please be sure to connect that ground conductor to the ground nut on the junction box and then make sure you have ground continuity with the kettle through the ground prong at the plug.

Re: Bronze or copper

Careful, both brass and bronze may contain lead. Up to 4% for brass and 15% or more for bronze. Brass also contains zinc which has been known to dezinctify when corroding. Dont know if that happens with alcohol though.

Re: PLC automated pot still

Good points boda getta. I am flattered by the comparison to Odins Istill. Id like to put a taller finned column on it but already within 1/2" of the ceiling. Personally feel that I am not even close to Odin with this prototype but could be on my next build. Ive kept my old rheostat controller s...

Re: PLC automated pot still

Funny the risks we personally accept and those we choose to avoid. Often with no rational correlation to the probability or the consequence. I do have a little silicon in my still. I also eat grilled meat and drink alcohol. Often more than the healthy 3 oz recommended daily allowance. I also engage ...

Scribbler, I like your ideas. I'm thinking that your malting tube ought to be my next automation project. I'll use the PLC though. I have an Arduino but never got very good at the programming for it. Also a PLC is easier to interface with devises like pump motor starters, solenoid valves and fans. K...

PLC automated pot still

My rig is a programmable logic controller automated pot still. The pot is a stainless steel kettle of 6.5 gallons. In the side of the kettle as low as possible is a 230 volt, 4500 watt water heater element. It is low heat density intended for water heaters that are used in hard water areas. Overall ...

Hello from the NW USA

Hello All, I’ve enjoyed reading the contributions of others to this site and have also learned a great deal from it. This is my first posting to the site. I’ve been distilling for the last three winters. I am from the great NW and only distill in the winter since I’d rather be outdoors when the weat...
