I once had trash can of corn slop
With which I filled my boiler to up top
I fired my still
Cut with patience and skill
I now have Hillbilly Pop

Re: Rum wash
Your over 13% abv now. I have heard plenty of people say that molasses don't finish out completely, but my last several molasses washes finished out .999. I also don't build ferments with an SG over 1.099. Could it be that your yeast just don't tolerate alcohol higher than that? What yeast are you u...

Re: What Two Thumpers Can Do
As Otis said, it is wise to insulate your thumpers and transfer lines. Also, transfer lines should be short and insulated to minimize exposure to external cooling. These factors might be why Hillbilly Popstar used so much propane and had a long run time. One n Done - Hillbilly Popstar Run Re: What'...

Re: What Two Thumpers Can Do
My personal experience with two thumpers is I can make the same quality product as I did doing 2 strips and a spirit run with my single boiler. The double thumper is power hungry and will drink propane like it's Gatorade at a sports even, but I can run 20 gallons of mash and make excellent product i...

Re: Premeasured yeast: is this a good idea?
People measure their yeast? I do. Why not? I can get thirty 7.5 gallon ferments (1.088 OG) from one pound of yeast. I think it is crazy watching people dump a half pound of yeast into a fifty gallon 1.065 wash. Seems like a waste to me. For that half pound of yeast in a 50g wash you get two ferment...

Re: Tell us about your mistakes.
I attempted a potstilled vodka from a sugar wash last year. I decided to utilize baking soda to clean up the esters and heads prior to final distillation. I had like 5.5 gallons of low wines. I researched high and low for the exact amount of baking soda to use. Somewhere in this forum I found some p...

I've read several different opinions about what high and low wines actually are. I've reached the conclusion that the best distilleries keep this a closely guarded secret. Grim over on SD forum found some info I dont know if I'm allowed to post links to another forum... but here it is. https://www....

Re: What's your preferred distillation technique?
I am still experimenting with how I like to incorporate my feints. Sometimes I dump em in the main boiler (the theory here is they undergo 3 more distillation to get cleaned up) and sometimes I add em to the last thumper (the theory here is having a higher proof charge in the thumper boosts overall...

Re: Bourbon grain bills
Sounds delicious. Be aware Crystal malts contribute very little fermentable sugars and will result in a slightly elevated final gravity post-ferment. Heat the stripping runs more slowly to avoid scorching. Sounds like you have done lots of thinking already, so this is probably redundant. Let us kno...

Re: What's your preferred distillation technique?
Forgot to mention: anyone use DOUBLE thumper??? I am just now getting somewhat used to running my double thumper. My distillation techniques are largely dictated by the size of my equipment. I have a 30 gallon fermenter. I ferment on grain and do about 29 gallon ferments. By the time I squeeze grai...

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
With beer's low barrel entry proof, wouldn't there be a lot of goodies left in the barrel just primed for a 130-proof newmake? I bet a single malt scotch would love it in there. I think a good whiskey should go first if it was charred. I think the beer is going to take mostly "oak". almos...

Yeah, I bet a good beer would leave as much flavor as it takes.Deplorable wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 4:50 pm That should make for a very interesting whiskey then. Ive got two of their barrels, one is better built than the other, but both have produced good spirits on their 2nd and 3rd fills.
I'd really like to fill it with rum though.

It was a homebrew shop, so I'm assuming it was used for beer. Smells like beer. Not very hoppy though. It smells malty like an English ale or a bock.

Re: Replacement for Vinegar Run in a Aluminum Pot Still !!
Aluminum is not considered as safe for distillation of alcohol for the same reason that it is not recommended for the vinegar cleaning run. The acids and solvents in the wash will cause corrosion and toxic by-products in the distillate. Stainless steel and copper are the 2 recommended boiler and st...

I've never heard it said that 80% of the QUALITY comes from the barrel. But I have heard it said the 80% of the FLAVOR is from the barrel. Personally I've gotten to a point where everything that is barrel aged for any extended period of time just tastes "oaked" to me. So much in fact that ...

Re: Graham cracker and marshmallow moonshine
There's no way you will get any "smore" flavor by mashing those ingredients. You're best bet is to start with a nice wheat and oat mash, then add your Graham and marshmallow flavors to the distillate is this the most common way flavors are added. Im referring to things outside of subtle f...
