Re: Gone to distill some gin at a distillery and shocked by some practices

Regardless of what proof we are running our gins etc. at, most of us are storing and handling high proof liquor before and after distillations and that is when we have to be very careful. I'm not aware of any distillery disasters that have been initiated by ignition inside a still. Indeed. There ha...

Re: Gone to distill some gin at a distillery and shocked by some practices

Pure ethanol vapor ignites at about 400C. No open flame and or red hot burners and good ventilation it seems like there should be minimal danger of ethanol building up to a point it could be explosive or be ignited. + 1 As both the vapors and fluids are confined to the inside of vessels and pipes, ...

Re: Copper Vs Stainless steel condeser

There is a study where seperate parts of the still were either copper or ss.
Too lazy to search for it now, but the result was: copper in the rising part and ss in the down part. That has both the benefit of copper in the reactive stage and neutral in the cooling stage.

That was: for whisky.

Re: Air cooled condenser. I'll NEVER go back to water coolin

I did not measure it, but placing wet rags on the cooling spiral may double the capacity (or even triple it?). But you have to pay attention all the time, because they of course dry and need rewetting. But it saves you a lot of water, as the vaporizing heat is much greater than the specific heat of...

Re: Best method to clean tools from motor oil, grease etc.

I have the two tools (a pipe wrench and a spanner) I need for my still right next to the stillsite. Took them out of my collection of tools just for my still. Just two tools, so that is no big deal. I once cleaned a chain of a chainsaw by soaking in foreshots/heads and it worked quite well. So if I ...

Re: Low wines into a thumper keg

So, how's the project going? People still use thumpers? Personally, I'd go with an 'inline vertical thumper' A.K.A. a column. a 3-4 inch diameter by 36" long column stuffed with copper or stainless scrubbers should perform at least as well as a thumper, if not, better. Oh, I use thumpers...

Re: Loaded Thumper

Ah, so it seems the boiler and the thumper were depleted of alcohol at almost the same time! I do not know much about taste, so I can not judge that aspect, but as for the alcohol the backset of 40 % can be treated the same as a low wine of 40 %. It is just 40 % alcohol and 60 % water. Just for this...

Re: Loaded Thumper

I tried to make a balance, but I am not sure if I understood your story correctly. You started with (11 + 4 ) @ 40 % = 6 aa (absolute alcohol) You ended with 5.8 @ 75 % = 4.35 aa product and 4 @ 40 % = 1.6 aa backset. This is 5.95 aa in total, which means a loss of 0.05 aa. Not bad. A boiler transpo...

Re: Cap and lid liners using PTFE transfer sheets

Wonderfull stuff, nothing short of that. But polyfluoralkanes are known as PFAS and both the production and the disposal are very bad for the environment. Which the producing company already knew for a long time, but did not care about. So also very bad for human society. The period of using is only...

Boiler - starting gravity of wash 1.020, measured 1.040 as backset??? <--- this is a mystery to me!!! Can't speak to anything else as I've not even run one thumper let alone two, but this seems normal to me. The gravity is a function of "stuff" in water. You've removed both water and alco...

What Yummyrum says and it also would be nice if you would:
a) use some interpunction so your texts can be understood and
b) tell us what you are trying to distill. Both in input and output.

Re: PFAS, "forever chemicals," PTFE/Teflon

We have had the same problems with asbestos, plastics and silicone: superior in use, but impossible to get rid of and very harmful in the production. In thermodynamics there is a law of conservation of energy, I firmly believe there is a law of conservation of problem. Each of the so called wonder m...

Well? How does it taste?

I tried to take another photo to show the viscous, sediment-laden, foul nature of the test sample but it revolted me. It got dumped on the weeds.
Do you think the weeds liked it?

Re: ? On double thumper build

I see no point in an extra long arm. A long lyne arm is either a kind of high riser, with a lot of passive reflux, or a kind of condensor, with air cooling. Depending on the angle. Between boiler and thumper or between two thumpers it might effect the overall result. Whether you want it, depends on ...

I translated your goal as finding out what sugar bite tastes like. That is: sugar seems to cause a sharp taste (so called bite) in the finished product. Your starting point (do tests!) I support, but I do not see how you can derive conclusions from your experiment. For not only the amount of sugar i...

I think support from other countries and especially from across the ocean is hardly of use for you. Even if/when it is well meant and motivated. Especially when you are in a hurry.

And by the way: what is a glass bottle condenser??

Interesting!
I suppose you assume the kW are in total delivered to the fluid. I.e. there is no loss from flame to contents of the boiler. And no loss from boiler to surroundings.

As you do not bother to use any interpunction I do hardly understand what you are writing, but the best thing I ever did (distillationwise!) was making adjustments to be able to use any of my boilers as thumpers. From that moment on I could do every experiment that I wanted to do.
