Re: Wrapping Sythetic Seals in PTFE Tape

Yup. Flour paste will seal the seam.
We dont have 1/2" tubing at the office as the air sampling stuff is all 1/4" for swagelock.
I ordered 3 feet of 1/2" from US Plastics.

Re: newbie's first rig started...

Auber has a great selection and they are located in Georgia.
Temp control is their specialty
They are very helpful on the phone.
You'll pay more for their SSVRs and pots, but their items are paired up to work with each other, unlike the crap shoot you get with Amazon.

Re: Wrapping Sythetic Seals in PTFE Tape

Your comments are offensive. You're on my foes list. You know what? Being born and raised in Pikeville, KY, I find the term "hillbilly" offensive as well, yet that is allowed to persist on these boards. Do a search for hillbilly engineering and let me know how many hits you get Connotatio...

Re: Wrapping Sythetic Seals in PTFE Tape

That's not PTFE tube it's PTFE coated tube, when you cut it the ends are exposed, who knows what the actual tube is made of. As far as I know all PTFE is white, I assume the tube is not white because to coating is so thin. I have used this to seal 3: sight glass with great success http://www.equals...

Re: Wrapping Sythetic Seals in PTFE Tape

Using inked cardboard in the "everlasting" gasket is flirting with rule 8, synthetics. Likewise, dont. Here's a proof of concept for a better seal on non standards sized openings needing a gasket. Take a length of PTFE tubing and split it lengthwise along one side. Slip the split tubing ov...

Re: MY SUPER SIMPLE CONTROLLER

/rant on Electrical tape is not a safe way to wire up anything, especially something with 30 amps and 240 volts. /rant off Not strictly true. NFPA 79 section 13.1.2.1 allows electrical tape to be used as insulation on a splice. Section 13 talks about wiring practices. I agree with you about using b...

Re: 3 inch valve plate design

Sungy, US pennies from 1983 and 1984 are 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. Some of the 82's are 97.5% zinc too. Depends on the mint location. Only pre 1982's are 95% copper. 95% copper pennies weigh 3.11 grams 97.5% zinc pennies weigh 2.5 grams Here's hoping you didn't get any zinc pennies in your valves....

Re: Wrapping Sythetic Seals in PTFE Tape

Easy. Unwrap a very used everlasting gasket. I've done it twice and both bits of cardboard where in the same condition they were when first wrapped. I used a section of cereal box with colours still on and they hadn't changed at all. Nice. Do you know the chemical composition of the ink on your cer...

Re: mason jar lids

Most glassware we get from the analytical labs have PTFE lined lids, and they give it out for free.
2 oz to 1 liter jars in clear or amber glass.

Re: MY SUPER SIMPLE CONTROLLER

/rant on It kills me you guys will spend $50 to $100 bucks on parts for your electric setup, hundreds on a column and boiler, hundreds on accessories, fermenters, grain, yeast, enzymes, etc. but $5 worth of wire nuts and spade terminals is beyond your budget. We preach safety here non stop. Electric...

Re: copper lid

I'm building a lid for a 8 gallon copper milk can. I have plans to attach a 3" x 36" stainless CM tower. I ordered a 12" x 12" sheet of 32# copper (42 mil) just to be sure the weight of the column dosent warp the lid and cause leaks at the tri clamp 20" diameter is pretty bi...

Re: Howdy Y'all

I spoke with the Olympus rep about detecting lead in what should be 99.9% pure copper.
He came out and re-calibrated the meter.
We had been using it in the field for delineating lead in soil at a refinery so it was slightly off.
After the calibration everything now shows no lead.

Re: Bronze or copper

Here's a 100% copper milk can I scored off ebay for $72. P1090146 (Small).JPG Tested the copper and solder with a handheld Olympus XRF meter. Lead free. I'm in the process of sanding off the lacquer finish on the outside with some 400 grit wet dry Ordered some 32# copper plate to fab up a lid and ad...

Re: newbie's first rig started...

I ordered my SSVR and pot from Auber as well since the Amazon route was almost a month lead time with shipping from China.
Auber had the parts to me in 3 days.
Same Leviton twist loc plugs and a plastic NEMA hinged box from Amazon.

Re: Howdy Y'all

You might want to consider doing a lead test in the solder used on the copper milk can... It looks like it was intended to be more ornamental than functional... Also check it with a magnet to insure that it isn't copper plated steel... Better safe than sorry... Thanks rad, I tested the solde...

Re: Howdy Y'all

No kidding it was a steal. I was worried it would be too small or real thin copper, but it is pretty stout. Pics of the boiler. The inside cleaned up real nice with some vinegar. The outside appears to have been laquered. I had to solder over the copper rivets holding on the brass handles as they we...

Long time lurker.
I've been reading the forums for almost a year. Lots of great info here.
Been getting my equipment together over the past few months and decided it was time to come out of the back woods.
