Re: sweetfeed whisky
Does anyone check PH on continuous runs on a regular basis? I am on Gen 5 of using 50% backset on every run except the original one of course and my PH was 4.3...little on the low side...but not horrible.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
I have about 5 gallons of 110-115 proof low wines collected from several stripping runs of SF wash. I am on 3rd gen of SF wash now. Question, I am ready for my spirit run and wondered should I dilute low wines with 3rd gen SF wash or spring water for the run? This is my big event since starting and...

Re: New still controller.
Is your receptacle rated for than kind of power? It looks like a 15 amp (115VAC) receptacle. If you push it beyond its limit, you could melt the bakelite receptacle housing and end up welding the contacts. If you up rate one component, make sure all components are equally rated including the wiring...

New still controller.
Finished wiring/fabricating a new still controller. Overkill, but after the Harbor Freight Router Controllers burning up on me, I wanted overkill. 2x 10k Watt SCR's from Amazon and the rest from the Hardware store.

Re: Weird distillate just above 80 till just below 80 TWICE!
So it seems I am just getting in to the hearts...2 quarts of fores...plus another pint at re-start...plus 29 pints of "heads" does this seem right to anyone? This still charge was 8+ gallons of low wines 4 gallons of backset and enough water to bring the abv down below 50%. All sweetfeed r...

Re: Weird distillate just above 80 till just below 80 TWICE!
So yesterday I had to shut down the run because of time constraints....but I had collected 9 pints of the weird stuff yesterday and after re-starting the run today, collecting 1 pint of throw away, I have collected 6 more pints that are either for sure the weird stuff or questionable. The distillate...

Weird distillate just above 80 till just below 80 TWICE!
So, this has happened to me twice now. The first time on a Peach spirit run and now on a Sweet Feed spirit run. At just above 80% ABV till just below 80% ABV, this nasty smelling and nasty tasting distillate has come through. Mind you,on this sweet feed run I have already taken out a little over 2 q...

Just loaded the still with the stripping run #4 of sweet feed. That was Gen 4 sour mash and the feints from Gen 3 stripping run. Gonna try and run My first spirit run right after this today. We'll see how it goes. Wish me luck.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
So, I finally gave up on making sweet feed, as it was too acidic and astringent for me. I decided to re-use the barrel to make a larger UJ ferment, so I cleaned out the barrel and stuck my head in -- and was almost overwhelmed by the vinegar smell. It's an old cherry pepper barrel. I though...

Re: Graham Condenser over Leibig for 4" pot still column
I also don't understand cranky at this point. Perhaps he thinks, in the coil of the graham is the cooling water, not the vapor. Also shadylanes answer is confusing. I think, if you use two condensers, the second one can be thinner without causing overpressure, because much of the vapor is condensed...

Re: Graham Condenser over Leibig for 4" pot still column
I had not considered a dimroth...but the cooling water could flow through a double helix coil of 1/2" tubing.. Then what size would the jacket needo to be as far as diameter and length...Also, what size inlet and outlet to the jacket to ensure the vapor has enough time in contact with the cooli...

Re: Graham Condenser over Leibig for 4" pot still column
New plan... I should be able to fit 211 inches of 1 inch tubing inside the 6x18 Graham Condenser. Then another 36 inches of leibig. Should be more than enough cooling capacity. Thoughts?

Re: Graham Condenser over Leibig for 4" pot still column
One concern I might have is making sure the bottom of the graham tapers down to the outlet to the liebig. I could reduce it from 4 inch to 2 inch...then 2 inch to 1 inch....that would be a step down. Also Cranky, what are your thoughts on using 1/2" tubing for the coil and the inner leibig vs....

Re: Graham Condenser over Leibig for 4" pot still column
I have modified my design for 1/2" tubing I would not feed a 1/2" tube with 2 x 5500W. Also 3/4" is little. Either a few 1/2" (shotgun) or a very long 1". My original idea was for 1 inch tubing...but you thought it was a bad idea? No, I did not say 1" is a bad idea. I ...
