Re: Corona mill “modification” using KISS principle

Like so many before me, I bought a Corona mill to grind my grin because it’s cheap and effective. Like so many before me, I got tired of cranking long before I’d gotten through the first batch. Like so many before me, I tried powering it with a drill. And, like so many before me, I discovered that ...

Re: Do Rye and Wheat mix?

Haven’t tried that combination thanks for the feedback SCD. I love the taste of rye (some don’t) but it doesn’t yield as much as barley but the combination I also like is a bourbon made from rye and corn. No you don't get the yield. No biggie though. Even if you get less it's worth the work Rye whi...

Yes you do, good point.

I use my garage floor for cold crashing if there's no room in the keg fridge and it works well!

Re: Crashed fermentation

Do any of you actually change yeast strains depending on the weather or do you recommend buying some of those warming mats? It's very common for beer brewers to do this. At least a few here do: https://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7693330#p7693330 Whenever I use bread yeast I use heat on...

Nice write up.
But through experience there isn't much us in running two thumpers..
Take alot of power to run.
Strips then spirit run will get you there faster.

Re: Sourdough Experiment

Hi, It's been a long time since I've on HD but here I am. This is a great topic. All my whiskeys are fermented via a sourdough starter. It ferments like a roaring train at 72f. I have had this starter for 6 years I only use it to make whiskey now.no more bread. When not in use I freeze it. It makes ...

Sitting in Riviera Maya as we speak.
Never been a tequila lover.
But now is the chance to try different stuff.
What would you all suggest.
To me it always smells like tails.
Any suggestions would be great.

Re: Unmalted All Rye Whiskey

The ferment appears to be done and it did not take long thanks to the enzymes doing their job. 36 hours after pitching, virtually no fermentation activity (bubble cap). It was another 12 hours before I could take some measurements. FG is 10 14 PH is near 6 Temp around 85F I was pretty casual/lax in...

Re: All feed store corn with enzymes.

I find the grind is necessary to get at the starches inside the corn without cooking it for a long time. The earlier batches were all cooked, whether on the burner or in the oven. Sorry if that was not made clear. I'd rather grind for 5 minutes than boil & stir for hours. I was messing around w...

Re: All feed store corn with enzymes.

The reason i'm going with the no cook method, even tho it may be a tad less efficient, is the ease of the process. Instead of boiling and stirring the corn for hours i get to boil some water, throw the corn in and go to sleep/work. Eight or 10 hrs later it is ready for the enzymes. Feed corn being ...
