Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

I've done two runs on my home made boka, Ive never tried to make rum with a Boka. My new still has a deflag on top of the trays, I get between 92 - 94% By trays do you mean Perforated Plates or Bubble Caps? 92% is the happy place for most perf plates running 4 plates. Ive run caps once in ten years...

Re: Whiskey first timer

I ferment on the grain, running on the assumption that I'd rather not pull any potential sugar out of the fermentation vessel, by fermenting Off-Grain, considering Lautering a bit, since a beer maker I know is getting back into the swing of things, and that is standard beer process as Stirrin has s...

Re: Nuclear Rum - Mad Science

I second the bitterness. Cherry can be very bitter so i would go easy. It will leave you with a black currant-wine taste. Thats all i can think of to describe it. I like to smoke-bbq and cherry is not a wood i desire. It almost seems perfumey But inyour case i think it may turn out quite well. Booze...

Re: Malting Corn and other Grains

Is it worth it. Depends on avalibility of base grains. I view it as an extension to the craft. Really going from grain to glass If i had the space i would even grom the grain. Makes it a complete experience All in alll,if you want to get cheaper booze, the buy the malt cause its still cheaper then co...

Re: Wheat mash foaming question

+1 on the step mash. Also keep the mash @ temp for a longer time. That will help convert more of the starch into sugar. It's the unconverted starch that causes foaming up and puking. Funny though. I did 2lbs/gallon Ended up with 1.052 gravity I though that was ok I never do iodine check. What i get...

Re: Maple Syrup

Seeing as you have friends who make syrup, it may be beneficial for both parties for them to only boil your batch of syrup down to an SG of 1064, Brix 16. They don't have to cook any longer than they have to and you don't have to add water to get back to 1064. You are right on. The easiest way to d...

So I created an extension. Actually it is 100% new construction.

With 100% rye.would you guys go all malt,50 50. What do you prefer I'd probably do 75/25 to try to cut a little of the astringency from the raw Rye. i do 100% malt. partly for that reason, but mostly it's easier less heat less work, and apparently living in the middle of grain fields in A...

I recently aquired 260 lbs of rye seed I got 55 lbs of it malted What would you do with it I was thinking 100% rye with 20% malted.
