Re: Barley Malt vs. Barley Seed
Folks This is a great thread. I have been incontact with GCB3 during his trials and tribulations and I have decided I am going to have a go at malting the seed barley grains I purchased from the local agri feed store. In fact the seed grain barley is feed for pigeons, so for any of you city slickers...

Re: Some basic guidelines for AG
Jimbo Myself and GCB3 are working away together on all grains and learning off one another. This post could not have been better timed. I/We did balrey mash with malted and unmalted barley and got very low starting gravity. We now know the reason - never boiled the UNmalted barley. This post has cur...

Re: Oz’s first go
Oz, do a stripping run as fast as your rig will take. Strip down to 20%abv or thereabouts. Coillect all in one container. Do enough strip to do one good spirit run. Then do a spirit run at a slow pace. Make cuts and put away for a year or 2. Rum off the spout is a rough spirit and it takes time to i...

First Wine to Brandy
Folks A friend of mine grew his own vines and made his own wine which was plonk. He gave me 20 wine bottles of wine which he told me was about 9% ABV. So in total I had 15 liters of wine. Using my pot and thumper I put 20 liters of water and 20 liters of wine in the pot, and 20 liters of water in th...

Re: Any Trappers on here?
I'd love to do trapping but in Ireland we have practically nothing to trap other than (fox and) mink which were wrecklessly released from fur farms by utter gobshites who had absolutely no regard for ecology and the disastrous effect these things have on our small mammals, fish and wild birds. Mink ...

Re: yeast farming prepwork and tools
Mashing, can you please elaborate more on the yeast you are trying to extract from sugar cane. I know nothing about this yeast and never heard of it. Why is this a unique yeast. Why are u after it. Has it special qualities? Why can you not purchase a commercial strain? All such info would be welcome...

Badmo, what an outstanding idea, thread and product. To assist in developing your cottage industry, if there are punters from different parts of the world that have a good supply of suitable SS containers, why not get them to send one of the containers to u which can act as template for the timber h...

Re: Upgrading My Boiler - The Way It Should Have Been!
Zed, A great and educational post, well done. Just to add my 2 cents worth, once one gets to a nice rig and finding the sweet spot to run it etc, the mind wonders to doing things with efficiency and in a time saving way. I discovered a few beneficial protocols in this regards that work for me 1. Add...

Mac, don't be offended but superstition is total horse shit. Humanity is a reality, whereas ghosts, leprauchanes, deities, etc hold as much reality on outcome as a rub of cats piss. Forget it. Get on with good protocol, practice and procedure and stop theorising as if in a drunken stupor. As I said ...

GCB3, if that likker is crap, just (on the QT of course) throw it into your still with another run. Might have to wait a few years though before it can mysteriously vanish! JD

As I type this I am in Spain drinking rum, it is called Ron (rum) Caramelo. It is 20% ABV and luscious. Basically it is rum with butterscotch flavour. I could drink it by the bottle. Really nice stuff. Just an idea if some one has rum lying idle around the place. JD

GCB3 - I will throw my wig into the green ready for a fight - a fact rearly admitted is that rum straight out the spout is harsh, and it takes time / oak / glycerol / flavourings etc to make it more paletable. I made loads of all moll rum over a year ago and I have yet to drink it. I remember when I...

Duck Hunter - this might also assist. When running your still aim to get 300 mils product every 15 minutes from your beer keg. This is just over a liter per hour. This should represent a reasonable rate of product flow. JD

BenS- so was the finished product worth it or not? Your good report as per the last post seems all negative? Maybe I am missing something. I am curious because I was thinking of doing similar - put funk from a Dunder pit into a wash for a few weeks BEFORE adding yeast and basically letting the wash ...
