Re: Midwest Contingent

Hey there crew. I'm still out here. I'm still game for a meet up. Is there someone else who may be good for hosting given we can't connect with Big Stogie. I did happen to see Ydoih8u at the Michigan Homebrew Festival this past weekend. It would be nice to connect with some of the others. Give a sho...

OK Stogie. Yes he's down. Uko wapi bwana safi? I PMed you back a while ago. I'm game... but now have a busy summer, so late summer or fall works better at present.

Was at San Juan, Monroe, Darrington, and Oso. I didn’t get out much in Monroe, but the other three… beautiful.

I’m back now in my own neighborhood.

Cheers!

Hey PNW folks. I happen to be in your neck of the woods this week (and last). It’s beautiful out here. I’m almost jealous.

Re: Midwest Contingent

If Big Stogie's up for hosting again, it'll be in the Houghton Lake area. If memory serves DSM Loki also tossed out the idea of hosting back in the day. But I'm not sure if he's still on the scene. He was in the Kalamazoo area as I recall.

Re: Rum Questions

I've never added dunder back to my collected spirit. I concur with those who ask 'why would you?' I ferment a mixture of blackstrap and panela sugar and it makes lovely rum. I save my dunder in 5 gallon buckets outside in the shop for years. It'll grow a think cap of funky mold. I'll add it to new f...

Thanks Dane, I appreciate the vote of confidence. I had actually thought of using something that won't freeze years ago. I hadn't thought automotive anti-freeze as I'm also of a mind that I want the least poison near my beverage as possible. But just never went so far as to doing anything with that ...

Of course I'm game. You're place was great Big Stogie. I've been off and on between distilling, mead making, and cider making. As I told BS in a PM, I recent filled a 5 gallon barrel with whiskey new make. I've got a couple of amaros I've made. Rum, bourbon, and rye... and some the same UJ...

It's a build your distillery type of game. Different character abilities, different spirits, need the right ingredients to make a given spirit, different still types, different aging vessels, different aging times, get money (points) for what you can successfully produce... or something like that. Distilled - A Spirited Strategy Game

About 20 months ago I pledged for a Kickstarter game that looked fun: Distilled: A Spirited Strategy Game. It finally arrived in the mail today. Nice artwork, game board and metal components. I have yet to unpack it, looking forward to having a go at it. But with my schedule, it'll take some time. G...

Just having a thought about my mention in the last paragraph above about having let my condensers sit full of water, it freezing, and them breaking. I have 3 high points in my coolant system: defleg, product condenser, and a water cooling system from an old AC unit above my reservoir. The last one d...

Hey there Saskatchewan. Sorry for the slow response, I'm a frequent flyer here of late. 1) My PC is working great these days. I have the coiled copper spiral in each of the tubes. Oops, late reply to Higgins from August... I make a fair bit of cider from trees in the area that people don't mind me picking. Cheers!

I ferment 45 gallon batches in a 55 gallon drum. Slow cool down. Infected every time, smells putrid... nasty work, but the whiskey comes out good. Some palates will catch the funk from the infection. It is sometimes noticed in mine, but not as objectionable, just noticeable. I'm going to get better ...

I bought a few bags a few years back. Had never done a whiskey prior. Here's my posting on it. I struggled with good mashing technique and had poor conversion. A potstill run twice will make better liquor. Than a pot with one plate on top. I have a flute with up to 5 perf plates and a packed section. I've been making whiskey on 2 plates mostly, running about 2.75 - 3 kW. I am absolutely not a connoisseur, but after 1+ years in a 5 gal barrel it is rather ...

I shared a label for my UJSM back in June of 2019. Had a bunch in a barrel for the last couple of years and am gifting some away now, which warranted a re-up on my label. This one has been in my mind for some time. Finally pulled it together and thought I would share.

OK, so I had ultimately blended my two bloody butcher batches. I think the final grain bill (from my notes and calcs) was something like: 70% Bloody Butcher Corn, 22% Porso Millet, 5% Cracked Rye, 3% Toasted Barley. Hydrated a new 5 gallon barrel and then filled it with the bourbon. 7.5 months later...
