Probably this is a lost cause. I don't mind the cider, it was cheap. The wine, I can still distill it, I just won't get much issue from it. Here's the issue or problems as I see it.. you've got high level of sugar, plus alcohol in the wine.. You diluted a sample, adding some yeast, and start to fer...

I wish I could come to Ontario, gorgeous part of North America! I will see if I can find some threads on HD (or even YouTube) for building a still under $100, no welding required... you might just convince me to go an alt route. Thank you for the compliment on Ontario (northern Ontario just north o...

Potassium sorbate is...

LOL, I will call B.S. that a noob getting started with distilling as a hobby will spend less (time OR money) building a setup from scratch than the cost of the Vevor. Especially since "most people", especially noobs, DON'T have welders in their garage/shop or know how to use one. Who said...

For what it's worth, I took a small sample of both the wine and the apple cider yesterday morning and diluted them both 50% with tap water. Then I pitched a couple tablespoons of yeast which I had started in a separate container with just sugar and water. By 1 pm today they were both fermented down...

I added a 35mm to 22mm reducer to the other end, to take my condenser. This is shown facing down in the pic below, it will be left unsoldered so that it can be rotated to the required angle and sealed with PTFE on each run. At least that's the plan! I have an oddball idea for a condenser which I'm ...

Sorry SB, have to agree to disagree. Half the cost? REALLY?!? Not from what I've read here on HD! Even if you can find free kegs, the other parts, tools, and supplies needed to craft it into a still will cost you a LOT more than the $109 I spent on my 9 gallon Vevor. Yes REALLY ! It says it has "potassium sorbate" in it. Is that by any chance a yeast killer? No.. it only retarder to the fermentation activity.. In response to your first item/issue, using baker's yeast to restart a wine base with is the wrong yeast to do so with.. Lalvin 1118 or 1116 is a better one...

You better get it to clear some or you'll have some scorching and puking going on..

And using only one tbsp of turbo yeast in 5 gal, no wonder it's taken for ever to finish, if it's finished..

You would be better off and get better result trying recipe from the T&T section as starters..

I'm considering mixing flour with vegetable oil to create a paste. I can relate to what you are stating as a retired long hole driller underground, but it will not work here.. I used 5 gallons (25KG) of fancy molasses in 65l of water. The fancy was only 20 bucks more then blackstrap so why not eh? I would add about 70 litres next time to get 2 decent stripping runs with about a gallon or 2 left for the spirit run. It finished up in about 10 days. I prefer fancy over blac...

Do I need the paste to be thicker? Should I let it dry? If the paste isn't sealing, it's because your making it too thin/liquidy and/or not enough is used.. as you state it's a use milk can, meaning the edges has some dents, which require more paste to fill them in.. Paste will seal up as the boile...

The rest I’ve got in my fruit press with some fiberglass window screen, and I’m squeezing out as much as I can. The plan is to let that settle, rack off the clear beer on top, and add it to the low wines for the spirit run. What is your expectation of the yeast after they have been exposed the craz...
