Re: Free shipping on 15-gallon plastic conical fermenters
What is your plan for a stand? It looks like the stand is sold separately :/ $70 for each stand... No stand. I'm basically following this build but will most likely build my stands on dolly wheels so they can be wheeled around but I'm also considering building them into a workbench top as well, per...

If wish I could have found a place locally that had them, would have probably gotten the 30-gallon ones.

Re: Multiple Simultaneous Fermentations, Recipes & Efficienc
Way too much time on the internet last night. Thought I'd post this because I found a place with free shipping on their 15-gallon conicals. Time to step this operation up! Most of the other places carrying these charge as much for shipping as for the tanks themselves. 2x 15 gallons food grade conica...

Re: Multiple Simultaneous Fermentations, Recipes & Efficienc
Going from multiple 5 gallon buckets to a 32 gallon brute has made things much easier. I'd hate it if I ever had to go back to just using the buckets. I hear you man, it's about that time I guess. I have to admit I am struggling a bit with the concept of no airlock though. Been eyeing this although...

Re: Multiple Simultaneous Fermentations, Recipes & Efficienc
Thanks again NZChris. I researched the "charantaise style preheater" a bit more since your first post. Does the preheat vessel actually function as a sort of flake stand where you route vapor through it to condense? I'm sure that would heat it up a lot more than routing cooling water throu...

Re: Multiple Simultaneous Fermentations, Recipes & Efficienc
From day one, I have been fermenting three or four charges worth in a single fermenter, so that each ferment provides enough low wines for a spirit run. One hard out weekend distilling gets a lot of likker aging in the cellar. A charantaise style preheater speeds up stripping by eliminating heat up...

Re: Multiple Simultaneous Fermentations, Recipes & Efficienc
All that being said, it sounds like you need to ramp things up sooner rather than later... You're doing a lot of extra and repetitive work by doing small ferments and distillation runs and that is what is making what should be fun seem monotonous... I think you are right. I'm using a 30L alembic bo...

Multiple Simultaneous Fermentations, Recipes & Efficiency
I'm still pretty new to this but I've been running 6 gallon batches of UJSSM and a 100% AG rye simultaneously for a little while now and it has become very clear to me I need a better system. For example, the amount of spent grains in the AG recipe is a little overwhelming at roughly 10lbs (dry weig...

Re: Humming/Buzzing Hot Plate
No, I haven't bypassed the switch yet because the thing almost never cycles when running the strips wide open. I wanted to test it first before "breaking it". Do you think the switch/temp control is what is causing the humming? I can open it up this weekend and test that out if you think t...

Re: Adding 240 while contractor is there
How's 20 minutes or less with 5500 watt on 240 volt with a 6 gallon load.. I'm up to speed in 18 minutes for stripping, and about 14 minutes with spirit run of 6 gallon at 35% using a 7 gal keg.. Mars That's sounds absolutely amazing but I'll have to change up my routine, which is now... Wake up at...

Humming/Buzzing Hot Plate
Sorry if I’m spamming this topic today but I seem to be in electrical tinkering mode. I’m currently using a Waring SB30 1300 W hot plate on my father’s 30L alembic until I finish my still. It has been fine (but slow) for several stripping runs but I’m about to have enough low wines collected for two...

Re: Adding 240 while contractor is there
It's not too late, that's a good idea also. I already switched the 120s in that area out to GFCI but we can just use a GFCI breaker for the 240. Will cost a little more but probably worth it.

Re: Adding 240 while contractor is there
For sure. This guy has done a lot of work with me and is time+materials on a day-rate anyway so it isn't going to cost me anything really other than material costs. Super excited about being able to bring >5 gallons up to temp in under 2 hours Thanks again.

Adding 240 while contractor is there
I know I need to do my own research but I'm in a bit of a unique situation as I have a contractor at my house now finishing up a basement bathroom. I ask him about adding a 240v outlet in my brew area and he said no problem but now is the time to do it before he closes up the wall (finished basement...

Thank you both. It will be a process to dial in the right ratios but that's the fun part right? That's a terriffic idea though to use NCHooch's receipe as a starting point as it still gives me a good set of step by steps directions to follow on some of the technical aspects while I experiment with d...

Looking for a peated barley/high-rye recipe.
Not sure if this is the best forum for this but the title says it all. King's county distillery (Brooklyn, NY) does a peated bourbon that is really something special. It is a proper bourbon so 51%+ corn and I know they use a UK-sourced peated barley as part of their grain bill as well. The "pea...

Re: Best State in the U.S.A. to start a craft distillery ?
Great question. I think your answer is easy though. What state/states have the most craft distilleries? What state has the most 3-5+ years old? That didn't happen by accident. I know NY has passed some pretty inviting laws and we have a very healthly and growing craft distillery community that has a...

Re: Mash Yields
I recently built a speadsheet/google doc to do this exact thing but basically.... 6 Gallons * 128 ounces per gallon = 768 ounzes x .07 = 53.76 ounces of pure alocohol. 80 proof product = 40% so 53.77/.4 = 134.4 ounces or 1.05 G of 80 proof, minus your forshots of course. I can do the math but what I...

Re: Fermenting a Single Grain Rye Malt
MDH, that is some very, very good information. Thank you for sharing some of your personal experiences. If you don't mind sharing, how much rye per gallon do you use? That makes a lot of sense about the high pH too so I'll be sure to pick up a reliable pH meter and an acid I can use to bring the pH ...

Re: Suprised by how out in the open distillation is/was
@skow69 - a farm distillery license is a license that was created in NY state in 2012 that makes it relatively affordable and easy to get a license to both make AND sell distilled spirits in NY. You are limited to something like 10,000 gallons per year and you have to use NY sourced agricultural ing...
