Re: Jokes

Two rednecks are sitting in a bar and one of 'em says "If I made love to your wife and she got pregnant, would that make us related?"

Other guy says "No, that would just make us even."

Re: Making a Steam Wand

I recently made a steam masher and I love it. Only ran it once so I am sure it will only get better. I used a large ice chest and a pressure cooker that I already had. I made a "U" shaped steam "wand" out of half inch copper that sits in the bottom of the ice chest and added a br...

Re: Distillation temperatures, step by step.

Elut, I think a thermometer will be a good idea for you to use, for awhile at least. It will give you one more piece of information to help you understand what is going on in your still. Sure, when you have been doing it for years you will gain enough knowledge that you won't need it anymore, but fo...

Re: Flaked corn

Well I finally got around to buy the "flaked" corn from the feed store. I opened the bag and its not flaked, its rolled!!!!! I went back thinking I grabbed the wrong bag. Sign on shelf says flaked, tag on bag says rolled. Oh well, since I made the steam masher it isn't much of an issue so ...

Re: legal question...yes I read what the introduction had to say

I tried to get this topic going on the new_distillers with no luck. They did point me to a gent in Connecticut who wrote a nice bill and and presented it to his reps (Dodd being one of them). He got no where. It is my understanding that the tax revinue in New Zealand went UP after home distillation ...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

I have always had a problem with slow ferments when doing rum so after reading through this thread I was excited to get another batch going. I mixed up 36oz of molasses and 6 lbs of dark brown sugar with 5.25 liters of dunder and topped to 5 gallons. I added the yeast bomb and the yeast. That was 2 ...

Re: Fermentation

From what I have read in this thread the biggest ptoblem I can see is the PH being out of whack. On the next batch add the juice of 2 or 3 lemons and check the PH. And I agree, ditch the turbo, if for no other reason (and there are alot of them) than the cost. Can't blame a noob though, I started wi...

Steam Masher

I built a steam masher last week and did a trial run. Still have some bugs to work out but I think it is going to work out great. I was able to do 20 lbs of corn in one shot instead of 4 batches on the stove. Talk about a time saver. Plus no scortching or sticking issues. I had a 68 quart ice chest ...

Re: Ebay barrels

UPDATE: I received a replacement barrel for the crappy one I originally received and let me say it is a thousand times better. Better wood, better craftmanship, better banding, just better. I was pissed off at this guy but after getting the second barrel I would consider getting another one in the f...

I get my copper scrubbies from the grocery store. Look for "chore boy" brand. Box says something like all copper, won't rust etc.

Re: Ebay barrels

Well I FINALLY got my barrel and I was less than impressed. The guy took forever to ship it. The interior was fully charred so no VISIBLE signs of varnish etc but the ends were sealed with wax  . The bands look like they were made by a kindergardener. It does however hold liquid, for now. When ...

Re: 3" copper source?

In my neck of the woods.....somewhere north of you I suppose.......I hooked up with a recycler that also sells. Copper, stainless, food grade barrels.......Ya gotta call ahead and you might have to wait a week or two but they will hold if they got it. Bought two peices of 2"x33" copper for...

Ebay barrels

There is a guy out of texas selling barrels on ebay. He gets em out of mexico. I bought a 5L last week and, after shipping, saved about $20. Was expecting it yesterday but to no avail so I can't elaborate on it, however some here may want to check it out. I give an update when I get it, or when I do...

Popcorn Sutton's Still for Sale?

I just found this on ebay. Dunno if it is real or a scam. If its real, great. If its a scam some of Popcorn's friends should put a stop to it. I think that there are a few here who knew him. http://cgi.ebay.com/MOONSHINE-STILL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ208QQihZ011QQitemZ320368434354QQrdZ1QQsspagena...

Re: help for a rookie :)

If you been doing all that reading jump in and get your feet wet. You know enough to ferment something. Even if you screw it up you will learn more than anyone can tell you. Besides, sugar is cheap. You will get something, and drink it, and like it but it will only get better. I been at this a littl...

Re: Flaked corn

JD. The yeild I am getting is my concern and that is why I was thinkin flaked might be better. With 10lbs of cracked corn and 2lbs of 6-row (for the enzymes) I am only getting a 4% wash for 5 gallons. I am a noob at this mashing thing so my methods may be flawed but I think I should be doing better ...

and how about sparging? Is it a pain? Maybe better before, or after ferment? I have never used flaked anything so I am not sure what to expect.

Flaked corn

I have been buying cracked corn from the feed store for my corn whiskey. On my last trip there I saw a bag of flaked corn. Has anyone ever used this? I am thinking that I might get higher conversion rates and mashing should go quicker due to the fact that I won't have to soak the corn as long to get...

Re: Tell us about your mistakes.

I have been at this hobby for a bit over a year now. Made some neutral in the early days and started playing with flavorings. I wanted a pepermint schnapps so mixed a little pepermint extract in a 750ml bottle of neutral. I didn't like it so it sat around on the shelf. Well.......last month I fermen...
