Re: Jackson Crossflow Condenser

Per air cooling: I've been having a little trouble keeping my 55gal drum of water cold for an entire vm run now that it is ~100 degrees outside here, about 15-20F hotter inside my tin-sheathed shop. For my last 16 hr run I just took an old shit doublewound coil coldfinger and put my cooling water th...

Re: VM first run notes

Patchwork: I find that after an excruciatingly slow heads removal I can pull azeotrope really fast. Yeah, about a liter every 20 minutes. 2in x 49in column, 12in double wound condenser. Other than that, pretty standard, I gleaned the design from the many posts , it works just like its supposed to. P...

Re: Cachaca

Just got a hold of a 50lb bag of evaporated cane juice from the local bakers supply. 1.08 to .095 in about a week. I am not after Cachaca, but just messin' around with rum. Point is, I'm stripping it right now and the low wines taste like no other rum I've tried. Incredible. It'll be Agricole in the...

Should I put it in the still or in the compost?

It's always hard this time of year. Right now we are experiencing the lowest temperatures ever recorded in this part of the world. So, it was an unseasonable warm day when I mashed 27#'s malt rye, 11#'s 2-row malt, and 3#'s cracked corn. My usual rye grain bill. I had a good conversion, it came out ...

Re: Corn and methanol

Did the spirit run last night. That shit came out good! Like chewin on creamed corn. Harsh taste was confined to the first 1l heads. Drinkable and smooth at 155 proof. Watered to 80 proof it is great... can't wait to see how it tastes after a few months on wood. Wierd how during the strip the heads ...

Re: Corn and methanol

Okay, got around to the rest of the batch. It came out normal and the low wines taste great. So this got me thinking: I ferment on the grain in a 55g stainless drum. This time I let the batch sit for a few days after ebulation has stoped in the fermenter before running it. Then dipped a 5gal bucket ...

Re: Corn and methanol

Yeah, Dunder. This is how I usually treat my corn, as well. This stuff just had such a painful burn to it that I initially thought that I had poisoned myself. I'm just afraid of tainting the rest of my low wines with this stuff, but I guess I could run em seperately. Hmm, hawke. Time to poke around ...

Corn and methanol

Just finished run one of three in a 36gal all grain cracked corn mash. Everything started okay, but a little headsy, and as the run progressed there was this really harsh chemical burning flavor that was persistent down to 18%. Needless to say, I spit on this one and I separated this from my normal ...

Re: Blackstrap Molasses + Enzymes

Aren't there nonfermentab;e sugars in the molasses? When my wash is fermented out it still has a brix of 7-10. That means there are sugars in it that the yeast can't get at... because they are not sucrose or glucose. So using something like the glucoamylase might break these into fermentables. Right?

Blackstrap Molasses + Enzymes

An experimental wash for me, trying to break the 10-11% barrier that I usually get from my molasses rum washes. As I understand it, the molasses I use is about 35-38% fermentable sugar. The yeast I use is standard superstart distiller's yeast (18-20% abv tolerence), but my washes always end up in th...

Re: Mullti still Distillery

If the top of the column is open to the air or if there is an air gap between the top of the boiler and the "lyne arm" how will you build the pressure to drive the thumper? kingearwig There is no air gap. I just was too lazy to try to draw a tri clover clamp. Oops! As for the column, it w...

Re: Mullti still Distillery

Alternatively, I was thinking of having the line from the VM be 1.5" or 1" all the way to the condenser, giving me a beginning reflux ratio of 4:3 or 2:1, bot of which are acceptable, I think.

First off, I didn't know quite where to post this so Mods, If you think it belongs somewhere else, feel free to move it. So, Being a little upset with my current pot and LM setups for various reasons, I've decided to integrate them into one large, built-in system. I have almost all of the parts to b...

Hi, Y'all

Hi. Been lurking on this site for quite some time now. I am here to get some advice and to give it, too, from my limited knowledge. I currently have a boring ol' pot still in which I make absinthe and rye whiskey, and a LM column for making neutrals. I use 15.5 gal kegs for fermenters, and for the b...

nontraditional coloring process.

Okay, so I've been reading this and the other absinthe thread, and am now two batches deep. I have been using a tweaked version of nigels recipe with more green anise, less star, and spearmint. I macerate the herbs and 5.5l 180 for at least 24 hrs at 90-100 degrees farenheit, strain, and distill. I ...

Re: Octuple parrallel compound coil

Okay, so I am a hobby 'stiller, this picture is from work (yes, a DSP, please don't blow it up), cant go into any more details than that. At home I run just a 15.5 gallon pot with a much simpler condenser, and a 2in LM nixon stone column. I was just blown away when I saw this thing in person, though...

Octuple parrallel compound coil

First of all: Hi and thanks. I've been lurking for a while and y'all have been a great help over the years. What do y'all think of this condenser? It goes on top of a 900 gallon pot and is glycol cooled. Note the 2in outlet to reduce pressure. This baby can rip. Theoretically. http://i709.photobucke...
