Re: Low wines into a thumper keg

First off: you don't need a thumper to be successful in home distilling. Just a pot still will serve you just fine, and depending on what you're looking to make a thumper may even be the entirely wrong tool for it. If you want to make a safe and simple thumper, see if your father can hook you up wi...

Re: Low wines into a thumper keg

Depending on the size of your thumper you could run some wash in the boiler and some in the thumper when you strip it and then do a regular spirit run, or do it the way you described, either way will work out fine. I do get a bit concerned when you say that your thumper is a repurposed pickle contai...

Re: 3" PC and dephlegmator vapor tube Question

I like to play around with the Engineering Toolbox - small circle in bigger circle tool to see what works and what doesn't. Multiply the diameter of your tubes with 1.25-1.5 to get a good distance between them. If you want to deep dive in dephlagmator and shotgun design theory I highly recommend Zap...

If you scorched it you'd know, there's no mistaking it. I scorched an AG bourbon once and it tasted and smelled like an ashtray in a very obvious way.

Yes.

You might want to make a tiny extra heads cut after you restart it (or so I've heard, never tried this myself), but it should be fine.

Great initiative Stonecutter! I think we should update the Wiki with this "new" definition, because the current Wiki entry seems to lean a bit towards commercial distilling. Here's the entré definition from the Homedistiller Wiki - Spirit Run : "During double distillation, low wines a...

Re: Considering building a shotgun

When I designed my shotgun I used this tool: Engineering Toolbox - Circle in circle calculator When you use the tool add like 50% to the OD of the inner tubes. That way you ensure a good flow of water between the pipes. I don't know the exact inner diameter of 2,5" pipes, but you should definit...

Re: Methanol concentrate in the tails according an EC study

Note also methanol content in AG batches is very very low to begin with. Let me state the obvious, to help newbs like me. Tails can be blended or re-cycled for whiskey, since the methanol content is low for whiskey. This is not true of fruit distillates, which are high in methanol, especially in th...

Re: Tons of questions

If I take what's left from the still after the spirit run and place it in a bucket to "ferment" it is dunder. BUT, If I put it in a jar and do NOT allow it to "ferment" then its Backset? Or are the interchangeable? Dunder is what's left in the boiler when you make rum. If you le...

Looks like pro-style bubble caps/pro caps. It's regular bubble caps but with an integrated downcomer in the middle of the cap.

There's some threads on pro caps around here somewhere that contain more info.

Re: Hello Folks

Welcome, you've come to the right place!

Also, love the name!

I think you may want to avoid a 1/4" vapor path. If your still pukes any solid and it gets plugged you may get pressure build up in the boiler, which more or less turns it into a bomb.

Your plan sounds very sensible. Good luck! :)

Re: Using HERMS Coil to Heat Boiler

I have not done this myself, so this is from a purely speculative theoretical viewpoint. If you use just water heating the boiler will be slower and slower. The bigger the difference in temperature between your heating medium and your boiler contents the more efficiently it will transfer heat. At th...

Re: Shotgun Proportions

Hey Vertical, If the tubes are 12mm outer diameter you can fit 7 of them in a 2" shell. You'll have a wider vapor path and a larger cooling area, which will make the shotgun more efficient :) If it's 12mm inner diameter then 4x of them is a common configuration of shotguns on the forum, 20-24&q...

Re: New Build Questions & Current Design.

Hey there Yoko, I'm running 2400W on my 30 liter keg still and it's sufficient, so 3000W will let you strip even faster. You should be able to breath effortlessly through the column once it's packed. I think you want bigger pipes for the shotgun. The most common design is 4-5 1/2" pipes. A rule...

Re: Kveik choice for rum

I ran 25l in a 30l fermentation bucket and that worked 4/5 times. One time it foamed so much that the airlock was catapulting foam up in the air like a little fountain.

If you decide to run with a small headspace make sure you keep an eye on your ferment and have a blow-off tube close as hand.

I think it would be very interesting to use the model to see what the differences would be when running with different volumes and ABVs in the thumper, like wash/water/low wines.

Also, I wouldn't mind taking a look at the model and see if I can convert it to JavaScript.

It's the .left-box CSS that's acting up, more specifically the 'float: left'.

With float:left.

Without float:left.

Removing it doesn't seem to break the 'new posts' page, but I can imagine that it breaks stuff in some other place.
