Re: Cornflakes whiskey
Got 2 gal sitting on oak sticks, and I have to say, even 2 weeks in the jar, this whiskey sets it's self apart. Very smooth, and now I'm 2 months later, and it is getting even better. Trying to leave it on the shelf for a 1 or 2 year review, but it's irresistible to unscrew the lid, smell, and taste...

Re: Distillate Question
How much water did you put in? Water weighs 8.34 lb/gal. If you used, say, 4 gal water and 10 lbs peaches,,, That's 10 lbs peaches to 33 lbs water, Or 1:3 Now, you hope to collect 10% of that from a 10% mash. If you keep the best part of the run, that's about 2/3 of 10% of a 1:3 mix. For this reason...

+1 to 501outlaw. Ethanol is hygroscopic, it absorbs water. 70% of your body is water. Similar side effects are felt from dehydration, sun poisoning, heat stroke, etc. I however, carry a native american gene that gifted me with "asian blush". I break out in hives if I drink a lot of cheap bo...

My piece of 2" copper came from a plumbers yard by his shed. Where it layed in the dirt, it turned orange from moisture.
A quick wash with a mild acid solution, (~5%muriatic), had it shining like new in minutes.

Here's a side note... If you live in an apartment in an urban area, don't discharge hot water onto the roof or gutter. Alot of police hellicopters run FLIR, or, Forward Looking Infra Red. That heat signature would look like a neon arrow pointing to your activity! Even out in the country at my buddie...

Re: Cooling Water Disposal Question
Your discharge should be 90-120 degrees-F. Ethanol boils at 173°F, so you will be exchanging heat at less than that or you would produce ethanol steam. Ever made spaghetti, and dumped the 212°F water down the drain??? The pipes are designed to take it. 140° is probably your hot water heater's limits...

Crazy question, but why not just dump a bit of pineapple juice in the fermenter or add a few drops to a jar? Seems more plesant than a ruined dish smelling of vommit, and a pissed off spouse. Lol (In the 1960's the U.S. spent $ millions to develope a pen that would write in zero gravity... The Russi...

I like to relax and enjoy my hobby, and it's usually getting late when I'm wrapping up. I like to chill with some clasic country (none of that shiny Caddillac pick-up shit they play on the radio today), bluegrass, or start with Ray Charles and let youtube or pandora roam through motown a bit. Capture+_2019-09-24-21-48-40~3.png I drilled the inlet and outlet in my 2"SG, so that 1/4" copper tubing fit snugly in the hole and soldered. To that, I have slip on fittings to 1/4" plastic tubing. Home depot sells an adapter that screws on a standard spiggot, and has a 1/4" co...

Re: Condensate Temperature (Reflux Stills)
Yep, it's slow. I'm currently running a 5500watt element on 120v so I'm actually only running 1375watts. It takes an hour to heat 10 gal of mash, 30 min to climb the collumn, and 30 min of equalibrium. 2.5 hrs before I start collecting. I have plans for 240v in the near future. Looks like the wife i...

Re: Condensate Temperature (Reflux Stills)
Coolant flow rate (as long as it condensed the vapor) never seemed to effect my 2" Boka as much as take-off rate. Start pulling too fast, and temp would shoot up instantly. I normally ran coolant rate to where it came out shower temp ~110° or so.

I was recently at the golf course, and the beer cart girls had a cooler of the house special. "Mom's Mix". It was so damned smooth and refreshing, we switched off from beer. It's green tea, lemon crystal light, and vodka. Sorta like a spiked Arnold Palmer, but light and with no after taste...

Re: Second run after stripping multiple mashs
NZ Chiris got me there... I'm used to making neutral/vodka. Yes, by all means dilute with a mash, it will add to the flavor. BUT, whatever you do, dilute when you distill. Nothing above 40% (80pf) in the still, EVER. You probably won't blow yourself up on the first few go-arounds with boiling on a h...

I'm a little too north for that drive, but it sounds like one hell of a deal!
I'd put about 100lb in the deepfreezer for future beer making.

Fostering a hive is a great hoby to have considering honey bees are on the decline. The local farmers and orchards will love you for it. Plant a patch of clover to make em happy. I gave up brake clean a long time ago in my shop. I use denatured alcohol in a spray bottle instead. It evaporates quickly, the vapors are less toxic, and cancer concerns from skin contact are less.
