Re: Honey Bear Bourbon

I used the 1 lb whole rye, crushed , instead of the oats. It came out ok to me, but i definitely prefer using the oats in the recipe as oppsed to the rye. Drinkabilty was still way up there, but the flavor did not come across as i had hoped. I will stick to the original recipe with oats from here on...

Re: Honey Bear Bourbon

Well, being the rye whiskey drinker I am, I decided to go with an experimental attempt at Honey Bear, with out the oats, and with rye instead. The backset I used 1 gallon from a batch with oats, so we shall see. Just got the corn and the honey malt cooking, so in a few days hopefully I'll be samplin...

Re: One run or two in a Clawhammer?

I have the exact still also, except with the Leibig doubled in length and angled 45'. Since it is a bourbon run i wouldn't pack the column at all. Doesn't really do much on this short of a column anyways. I made my condenser larger to be able to run it harder on stripping runs, but for the most part...

Re: whats your music

Talk about a lady that can charm any snake... My go to for stillin is a little female blues artist naed Beth Hart. Janis Joplin coming thru in present time is the best way i can describe her. She's been touring with Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa lately. Then I'd have to say a little Pink Floyd. Ease...

Re: Honey Bear Bourbon

Well, just finished another HBB run, this time with the oats added. Sure took a lot of self restraint to keep from drinking a little more than a taste while making cuts. Sure was smooth. This recipe NEEDS to be in the "Tried and True" section. If someone with as little experience mashing and distill...

Re: Honey Bear Bourbon

Next run will be double distilled. Wanted to have some backset to start the next mash, and get more flavor that way also. My inventory was getting a little low so I just couldn't wait! Single run for first, double the rest. Gonna try to run the feints with some feints from an All-Bran and a Corn Flak...

Re: Honey Bear Bourbon

Well, finished the run. Other than a slight puking before the fores, no issues. Still ran about 5-10 degrees hotter at top of column than any other runs I've done. Had about 300ml fores, ended up saving about 1.75 liters of 140-90 proof, blended down to 110, minus the 4oz I took in the middle of the...

Re: More Texas Copper Porn

Holds 6 Gallons. Leaves me the room for 5 gallon runs. She's spitting out some mighty fine HBB at this moment, down to 90 proof, right in the middle of the hearts right now. Thought about building a bigger one, but now I see this is the perfect size for me. I'd just drink more if I could make more!

Re: More Texas Copper Porn

Tried just about every approach I could. Grass here in southeast Texas just too bad for feed stores to justify selling unpelleted (protein added) sweet feed/COB/ sweetened all grain horse and mule feed. No big worry. Gotta batch of HBB in the still warming now. If it turns out like I think it will, ...

Re: Honey Bear Bourbon

Well, it finally happened. My first attempt at an AG. HBB was my poison of choice. Went to get my grain, and made my first mistake. Milled all the grains together in one bag, as I forgot about adding honey malt to corn to keep loose. Put the 7 lbs cracked corn into my mash tun and added the 212' boi...

Re: Bargain Mash Tun complete!

It is a quarter turn brass valve used for installing the hose outlets for hooking up a clothes washing machine, instead of a faucet. Longer shank with fittings make passing thru walls of coolers easier. Valve was $8.00 at Lowe's Hardware.

Bargain Mash Tun complete!

Wanting desperately to make an attempt my first all-grain run, but didn't have a mash tun. After a few searches, I finally found the stuff I need at a bargain. The local Lowe's Hardware store had 10 gal. Igloo water coolers 75% off, so I picked up one for 12.99, as opposed to 49.99. A few CPVC fitti...

Re: Using dried fruit in a mash

Added a little dried tropical fruit to a morn meal mash, like about 1 lb. To a 5 lb. Corn meal mash. Boiled the fruit for about 30 min to rehydrate, then mashed it it up real fine and added after mashing the cooking the cornmeal and adding the amylase to help convert it. I think it. Acted more as a ...

Re: More Texas Copper Porn

She's made a few batches since I built her. I think the Texas Gulf coast gives the copper a premature patina,as she's not even a year old yet. She talks alright, it's just that I am only recently learning to understand what she's saying, but the purr like a kitten when into the hearts makes my heart...

Just a little pic of my "Bonnie Blue" posing for a little copper porn. Just finished a run of Odins Bran Flakes and cleaned her up, getting ready to be stored for a few days.

Just ran up the 10 gallons of Odins All Bran that was fermenting for the last 8 days. Made a nice batch sitting out on back porch in this wonderful southeast Texas weather. Gonna be a good weekend..I can feel it!

Re: Big Howdy from Texas!

Thanks for the welcome. Definitely looking at the Honey Bear bourbon. Not too crazy at all about paying 95.00 for my favorite 750ml. bottle of Garrison Bros. Bourbon. Just trying to get the art of the cut down first. Just not quite ready for the all grain route, needing a little more practice. This ...

[/img]Howdy all.. a definite noobie to the forum here. I've already spent several days here reading over the topics, some line for line even. As a lover of fine Bourbons, and tequilas, this forum has my tastebuds quivering. Can't wait to get another batch going myself. Pot distilling, as flavor is w...
