Re: All Bran Recipe

Have done many different ferments and to be honest this is my “go to” recipe aside from the fact that I use raisin bran instead of all bran, only because I tried raisin bran vs all bran and with the raisins it fermented faster and tasted better in my opinion. But then again that’s just me and you’re...

Re: Has to be a better way..

Safety first and foremost! These forums take a very strong negative view on the use of plastics and synthetics in distilling. It simply is not safe to use these during any part of the distillation process with the exception of HPDE buckets which are acceptable for fermentation. There simply are too ...

Re: Is a stripping run really necessary?

+1 to Johnny I have 3 stills and a thumper and will often strip into a smaller boiler for a spirit run, the thumper fits on the small and medium boilers and the big one is for stripping only. Like most I have a 58L keg and for the medium I have a 27L stainless fermenter converted, and for the small ...

Re: Liebig Condenser question

In other words what is the theory and science behind such a small connection. The most common sized Liebig you’ll see here is 3/4 over 1/2 so at some point the vapour path needs to be reduced to facilitate attaching said Liebig. Common riser size from a beer keg is 2”, some will reduce at the top o...

Re: ethanol hand sanitizer

I did a batch a few weeks ago for wifey, just used my most reliable recipe “raisin bran sugar head”. And ran it as I always do for drinking “once through the big pot still then once through the small pot with a thumper” usually get around 80% when I’m done stilling. For sanitizing I watered down to ...

Re: Hot pepper wine/shine

Just wanted to follow up on this as I finally had a chance to run it. First pass through my 27L pot still then ran the low wines through my 10L with a thumper cutting off my collecting at 50%. Ended up with 2.4L @ 78%, aired out for 3 days then watered down to 45% netting 4.4L total. On the nose the...

Learn to ferment and distill using your God given senses and you can make booze anywhere any time with any still regardless of circumstances. Use the correct amount of sugar and nutrients.....watch what the ferment is doing.....taste to see if it's dry.....run it.

Re: Hot pepper wine/shine

I typically do 23L ferments with 4kg sugar as a constant, for this one I used a mix of jalapeño and Serrano peppers as that was all I could find in the shops right now. Basically as follows -1lb each of the peppers (2 pounds or 1kg total) -4kg sugar -1table spoon lemon juice -bread yeast -20L clean ...

This is the stove I found at the flea market, course it didn’t look that nice till I polished it and what a gem Indeed.

Have used it twice now for boiling water to make sugar washes and it works beautifully.

I’m sure this may have been covered elsewhere in the multitude of pages here but thought I’d share a recipe I found and am currently fermenting for myself as an experiment. Re: Rye bread whiskey taste

Raisin bran cereal makes a tasty drop and I use “jack Daniels” smoker chips to colour/age.

Also tasty as a white dawg, usually I water it down to 45% abv for consumption

A mix of raisin bran and cornflakes sounds interesting and will likely be my next effort.

Ran it medium slow, threw the foreshots and got 5.0L at 26%. I diluted that with 2.0L of backset to give me 7.0L at around 19% and back into the boiler. I noticed a very unpleasant tails-y smell about half way through collecting the 5L Maybe my hopes were a bit too high for this but I wasn't impres...

Actually I do raisin bran quite often,I find it ferments quickly and easily while tasting a lot like “makers mark “ wheat whiskey. The only question I've got is whether it really is worth boiling the flakes. A few people have simply crushed them and have said they've got good results. I'm going to boil them as that was the original recipe unless I get positive feedback on simply crushing. Maybe someone has done both so has a c...

NZChris, which spirit is your personal favorite used as the base? If whiskey any particular style?
Just wondering what might be better or worth trying besides "Irish" style whiskey.

You guys got me wanting to make a batch or two. :)
I mostly use cornflake or raisin bran whiskey for this.
