Re: Tried and True Calculators
Hey guys I've been getting a lot of requests for access to the calculator spreadsheet over the years, have been away from home brewing for awhile as I made so much hooch in the beginning I still have a bunch left! Anyways glad folks are having fun with it.

Re: Rye bread whiskey
So I did my first 2 runs of this, one with what I thought was a very dense pumpernickel I got at kroger. Then I found some of the Mestemacher brand, and apparently what I thought was very dense wasn't even close to this stuff, and it turned out a hundred times better. So in my limited experience I w...

Ah, I’ll fix that one tomorrow, thanks!Kareltje wrote:Ah, nice one!
I have been translating to metric some recipes too.
The first one seems to be quite close. But in the second I found a large difference.
On the second I got 2,4 kg of each malt, while you got 0,7 kg.

Re: Tried and True Calculators
Looks like somebody was fooling with it and screwed up the UJSSM backset value. What you do is put in what percentage of your 2nd gen you want to be backset, and down below it'll give you how many gallons of water and how many gallons of backset based on the percentage you entered. See pasted output...

Added a few more. Here is a link for an editable Google sheet. I have a backup, but please don't edit anything except fermenter size. If there are any errors noticed let me know and I will fix. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1U8KCxZxRewhDdicfT0_pCnmyBoNJTc-GzEDU0sBy_Mc/edit?usp=sharing"...

Tried and True Calculators
Hey there everyone, I put together this OpenOffice spreadsheet that calculates all the ingredients for many of the Tried and True's. It's based on the size of the fermenter you have, and the goal is that it will calculate up a recipe that will fit in it. Also has links to the recipe for easy access,...

Thanks I'm giving it a try with the Booner's backset in the UJSSM, we'll see what happens!

Backset and feints noob question
Is it acceptable to use backset from different recipes as long as they are similar? Like Booner’s backset in UJSSM?
How about feints? Ok to mix Booner’s feints in with a UJSSM run?

Fusel oil/tails/pot still question
Hello all, I have a 6 gallon pot still w/ thumper. I've done about 10 runs with Bird Watcher's and a couple corn meal+sugar. Tryin' to get better with cuts. I have a bunch of pint jars and I just keep swapping out when they're half full and let them sit for 24 hours minimum. It's real easy to see th...

Re: Help adding overflow pipe to condenser
Stillin with the plate is like steering an aircraft carrier. Changes to power settings will take time to be seen in your still. Make small changes, and give them time to propagate. It looks like the cornsers of you 12x12 plate will stick out from the edges of your boiler. Be careful, that plate wil...

Just ordered a 1/4 inch 12x12 alumimum plate from Amazon, will see if that does the job.OtisT wrote:cellsaver wrote: IA three pound heat sync between the hotplate and boiler eliminates the surging for me. That's a 1/4" thick aluminum plate, 10" x 10".

Re: Help adding overflow pipe to condenser
Howzit work with the hotplate? Have you modified the hotplate to eliminate the thermostat, or is the heat output proportional to the rheostat setting? Typically, hotplates are controlled by a temperature setting and will cycle on/off/on as the burner temperature approaches the setting. It is best t...

Re: Help adding overflow pipe to condenser
Are you trying to tell us that there is no inlet or outlet in your flake stand and the water cooling your worm keeps getting hot? Drill holes just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the plastic tubing you decide to use for supply and drain plumbing. Just jam the tubing into the holes for...

Re: Help adding overflow pipe to condenser
Yeah sorry I wasn't clear about that. There's an inlet/outlet from the condenser coil of course, but not for drainage of cooling water, that's what I'm looking for. Towards the end of a run it's constant changing out of the water and ice melts in a couple minutes. Can't figure out how to post an ima...

Re: Apple Brandy!
I been working at apple brandy too. Lucky to have a family owned apple/cider farm right by me. They sell filtered and unfiltered apple cider, neither with any preservatives. Also have an apple/cherry with I haven't tried yet. I got the unfiltered apple cider. At first I didn't think my final product...

Help adding overflow pipe to condenser
My new 6 gallon all copper rig works great, but I was a little disappointed to find that the 1.5 gallon condenser doesn't have any inlet or outlet. I can deal with no inlet, but I want an overflow outlet near the top. I'm ok w/ drilling a hole but I don't want to solder. Any suggestions?

Re: One-and-done advice?
I haven't used any sugar in the fruit runs. My guess is that the answer lies in the heads and probably also just expecting too much. Got bananas fermenting at the moment, will hope for the best!

Re: One-and-done advice?
This is all great advice, but the flavor I am looking for is in the fruit runs. Tried filling thumper with pureed peaches or whatever, still no fruit flavor in final product. Any advice for this issue?

One-and-done advice?
I have a 6 galloon copper still w/ thumper+hotplate. I'm a newbie but have done about a dozen stripping+spirit runs, tried several mashes/washes: all grain, sugar only, Welch's, peach, apple, and molasses, all with stripping then spirit runs. I've seen a few mentions of one-and-done runs but I can't...

New from East Tennessee
Hi all, New to distilling, started with one of those chinese 5 gallon stainless sets to see if I would like it (and now I'm hooked), graduating to a 6 gallon copper pot/thumper/worm. Why 6 gallons? Most of the mash recipes and my fermeneters hold 5 gallons, and I can't fill my 5 gallon still up! Billy
