Re: A Series of Firsts

Since I respect your angle on this, NZChris, then I'll have to concede that cayars is correct in saying "Kiwi's method is for novices who don't know how to do cuts/blends..." Attaining the " Blend, taste and judge " level is still far away and untrustworthy for me , so until I ga...

Re: A Series of Firsts

Point taken, cayars. It was a little levity on my part. All those little numbered jars with cuts provide a unique situation when all your liquor components are separated. Once mixed, you can never return to this point, so it's your time to shine! The cuts mature nicely after twenty-four hours of air...

Re: A Series of Firsts

I like that you're using those numbered collection jars, FLOB.
If they're for Kiwi's cut method, It's the best only way to make cuts.
... and I would've grunted like Tim Allen when flipping that 240vac breaker on.
Good write up.

There's lots of happy T500 users here. We can't ALL start with Rolls-Royce equipment, so you know what you do? Above all, be safe . Be knowledgeable. And make the best liquor you can. People have been doing this thing successfully for hundreds of years under conditions that I'm sure sometimes would ...

Unless the malted barley is at least 150°L diastatic power, you may not have enough conversion power.

And if you have to give up motorcycles, I think distilling's a great substitute.
Good luck with your new still, and Welcome!

I operate an 8-gallon, 1500-watt electric in my (pretty much open-space) basement. Three things start up at once when I begin: •The 1500-watt (modified, non-cycling) hot plate for the boiler •The recirculating water pump to the Liebig condenser from an open 60-quart cooler •A box fan blowing over th...

Greetings, HikingViking! Building a pot still is a great approach to begin learning so much. Sometimes when my mind soars (sores) with all the intricacies of distilling, I have to reel it back into the basics of what we're really doing here: simply, coaxing alcohol out of a solution. That's the valu...

Welcome, BigHoss_ZW. Electric heating has its own rules in the world of distilling. Stills require heat management as opposed to temperature management to obtain ideal output. Beer brewing is a fine prerequisite to distilling as it teaches the strict fermentation processes necessary in both arts. Bad fermentation methods increase the probability of rotten beer and unimpressive liquor. So, understand your brewing ferments, and pay attention to what influence and chemistry ...
