Re: Propane burner and a reflux still?

Modified Hot water tanks work great as a heat source . They come built with flame arresters in the bottom which are essentially perforated metel that spreads the flame out out a lowers temp to below ignition temp . The boilers are lined cast iron and work well as boiler or as atmospheric steam gener...

Re: Temp Control - you're doing it wrong.

Just a quick note a pid control is really easy to set up . You can adjust the slopof the heating element ( so it comes on at 10% up to 100% based on your setting ) or just straight on /off . Pid on eBay 20$ with solid state relay. Rtd temp probe 10$ . The pid turns the relay on or off or on a slope ...

Re: Spirit Cloudiness --- A Quick Effective Fix

Sugar ,and molasses do not produce methanol . Methanol is produced from pectin , or methyl esters of galactos ( bad spelling ) . After collecting feints from multiple sugar washes we ran pure feints and absolutely no methanol was produced . Just to be sure we had it tested at a local university on g...

Re: First post from Toronto

Well I agree with most of that except the maximum fine is 500$ for first AND second offence and the criminal aspect limits jail to 2 yeRs . Most vodka companies here don't actually distill ,ban** , prince i*** , iceb*** etc buy directly from lcbo here in Ontario amd just add wAter , a label and sell...

I built a few 2" and 3 " columns but funny enough it's easier to make controls and feed for larger ones . I am working on the same design for seperation of maple syrup . Make some booze , make some maple syrup . How Canadian ,eh .

Re: First post from Toronto

I am also a little hesitant to post pics as your guidelines limit the units to 30 gallons . The bottom boiler/steam generator is bigger than that as I built it for a small winery . I used a ss drum I welded up connected to ss packed column with a combination of ss tooling wAste ( really sharp and da...

Re: Spirit Cloudiness --- A Quick Effective Fix

Personally I found big blue water filter housing with a series of filters work great especially for volume . I use a three filter set up with a 50/5 mic first (50 mic outside 5 mic inside ) then a 1 mic then .35 for submicron filtration . They are easily backflushed to clean them. You can run litera...

Re: First post from Toronto

Even if you distill to azeotropic levels there is still a large congeener content if your goal is nutral spirit . If you are distilling FOR flavour you are absolutely right , but that is why whiskey is stored in charred barrels as it is a low grade form of activated carbon to slowly adsorb( adhere t...

Re: Can someone please doublecheck my method

I bought big blue (4x10") water filter houseing with 50/5 mic filters (50 mic outside 5 mic inside ) and pump it through . A first rough filtering can be done by just pouring the mash off into a bucket or mash your material in a filter bag like a paint strainer . I made large filter sacks out o...

First post from Toronto

Hello So this is my first post . I live in Toronto (Canada) . I work with several wineries up here doing r&d . The laws have recently changed for the better that allows individuals to sell their own products . You can either buy azeotroic 96% from the lcbo( liquor control board ) or distill it y...
