This seems to be a strangely absolute statement. If you get joy out of pursuing a max number, have at it I suppose, but it's not required at all to make a tasty drink.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
I'm finally getting back into distilling after a few years of only doing beer. I bought a house in 2018 and just never got around to working out a new setup till now. In late November / early December I did two rounds of fermentation on a roughly 50/50 rye/barley mash. I say roughly because I would ...

Re: Questions for those that lauter
Im really interested in how you make out with this. As an all grain brewer, I too am determined to try lautering. I have no problem fermenting on the grain. However the convenience of having a nice clean wash in the fermentor can make the distilling steps so much easier. I have lautered barley mash...

Re: Single Malt Barley on Merlot Chips
Looking forward to following this! I'm working on my first single malt- finishing my last stripping run as I type. The first two mashes used 2-row and raw barley, and on the third I used Maris Otter in place of 2 row since that's what I had purchased in bulk for beer brewing. Going to age on a mix o...

Re: Single Malt Whisky Defined by Region
I'm curious about the use of "darker malts", do you mean like crystal/caramel malts? How much do you need to use to make a difference, 5-10% like in a beer or a lot more? I'm thinking my next batch is gonna be straight 2row malt, like an Irish or light Scotch, and then after that start pla...

Re: My first attempt at gel/mashing corn... didn't go well!
So I took another crack at this and it went much better, so I thought I'd give an update on what I changed. The same: I still had a bunch of the same fine rolled corn, using a coarser grind will have to wait until I finish that tote. And the same 2-row Canadian barley, pre-crushed. The different: I ...

Re: My first attempt at gel/mashing corn... didn't go well!
Even with all the straining I did before, a lot of the smaller particles went through. Settled in the fermenter so that the top half is free liquid and the bottom half is grain particles. So it looks like I'm not done straining yet. Still working on getting the post clean too. After about three roun...

Re: My first attempt at gel/mashing corn... didn't go well!
Hmm, I'll probably distill it anyway just to see if it does make it through. The corn may be free but all that barley wasn't. I'll starting to think I'll try this once or twice more to get enough for a spirit run, and then move on to single malts, or Canadian style blends with smaller proportions of...

Re: My first attempt at gel/mashing corn... didn't go well!
I'm using fine rolled corn - basically grits/flour with the odd larger piece throughout. I dint do a lot of corn mashes but i think you problem is the grits and flour. i thought its cracked or whole corn in corn mashes. mix your dry ingredients first and then add water slow. ie like when you make g...

My first attempt at gel/mashing corn... didn't go well!
Hey guys, I'm still waiting on ebay for my solder to attach my column to my brew kettle lid (they seem to think it's already delivered  ) but in the mean time figured I'd get some washes fermenting. My girlfriend likes bourbon, so I figured I'd do a simple 51/49 corn/barley grain bill. I've be...

Re: New pot still build- 10gal brew kettle
Thanks guys! Using that brew kettle you will have no problem with stove cycling, as you said it comes with a bottom diffuser plate already to avoid hot spots or surges from the stove element. Great to hear :D I know most recommend the keg route, but I figured I already have such a nice piece of hard...

Re: New pot still build- 10gal brew kettle
I've come across a few times recently in my readings, about stove cycling causing issues. It seems a common suggestion is to add a steel plate to help smooth out the differences from the burner. My kettle has a 5mm tri-clad bottom. Would this fill the same purpose as a plate, or do I need to look fo...

Re: New pot still build- 10gal brew kettle
So I've bought most of my parts- discovered these handy little fittings called Street Elbows that one end fits into a fitting and the other accepts the tube- which will help me eliminate a joint. I'm sure that was obvious to some people but you never know who may read this. Works perfect for going f...

New pot still build- 10gal brew kettle
Hey everyone, Hopefully this is the right forum for this. I wanted to start my build thread during it's planning stages, so I can ask some questions as they arise if I can't find answers. I've been reading as much as I can for weeks, as I've been paying off some other expenses before jumping and buy...

Re: Hopless beer recipe whiskeys
I just brewed a Guinness clone, and did a stripping run of the piggy - back sugar wash I made from it. How soon can you taste those specially malts come through? I'll see if I can pick up any of the roasted barley in it tomorrow - I used more than I should have, even for Guinness! But this was also ...

Nice! I was drooling over their website but couldn't justify the cost until I know I'll stick with it. Gonna build a simple pot still and fit it to my stainless brew kettle (Spike 10 gallon).Brokenjeep wrote: It was a tough call but lucky a used north still jug came up on Kijiji!

Re: Whisky Lover in the Great White North
I've been using US-05 and S-04 dry ale yeasts, just in some practice sugar washes that I ran through mu beer grains to pick up some nutrients. I don't think I'm pitching enough though, the first one didn't take off until I added another pack, and now the second hasn't done anything even with additio...

The still build is on hold for a couple weeks, just had to pay for a bunch of work on my truck so I h...

Whisky Lover in the Great White North
Hey everyone, Hello from Southern Ontario, Canada. As you can tell by my username, I'm a home brewer. As a lover of whisky as well as beer, my interests have naturally drifted towards distilling. It seems like a no brainer to take what i know about working with barley and other grains, to making ano...
