Damn, what a penetrating and calm look this dude has! My white and black envy all at once.
Wishing all the best to him and his family.
By the way, anyone to taste Dettling whiskeys? How divinely good are they?

Re: High rye wash in an electrical boiler?
I appreciate the direct answer. which leads me to believe, while using flaked rye at a low percentage, it won't cause you too much issues. So had I let my beer clear more, I might have been okay in the still. Luckily for us, unmalted rye (as steamed flakes) makes the scent and the mouthfeel which a...

Re: High rye wash in an electrical boiler?
So what is it about rye that scorches so easily? Is it unfermented sugars? I used flaked rye in my recipe. What did you guys use? *** *** *** My final question is, is it possible or impossible to distill a beer with rye in it on an ultra low watt density element? Well, it depends... the vapor-treat...

Re: High rye wash in an electrical boiler?
My condolences... there might be a pellicle in the boiler that could scorch Nah, that wasn't it, man. I had my heating element burnt with the rye wort as clear as beer and with no infection in it. It was like: wow! it's clear, it's yummy, it has a fine scent, imma run it out on induction and a heati...

Re: Kveik
Hmm... not sure about sugarwash, though  Just after my vosskveik stouts are ready and bottled... I like fermenting a wort for my allgrain distillates using the same bucket. You'll get a surprisingly low fusels quantity, not so prolonged heads and rather "edible" deep tails to dig in....

found that jar 48 (<5% abv) had a ton of peat in it, but nothing was left of the nasty tails, so I added it to the final cut It was a sweet decision  though it's hardly possible to call that fraction "sweet waters" in our peaty circumstances. The one before that is now 2 yrs old ...

I like to mash 100% of Crisp Scottish Ultra 80 Peat malt. Smells like Lagavulin  If it turns out a lot of peat then your hands are always free to blend it with more neutral malt distillate, eh? ;) And if there is not enough peat then there is just not enough peat so, nuthin to be done :econfus...

Re: Noble Vodkas of Russia XVIII Century
I can imagine that fat washing the low wines would have some effect on removing flavours. Certain compounds are going to be more easily fat soluble than water / ethanol soluble (notably any oils present) and there's a reasonable chance of those fats remaining in the boiler. I would think that even ...

Well, thanx for this brilliant write-up now. Man, my missus is kind of certified cheese maker and can easily make Camembert or Stilton. In the second case, you’ll be tired of waiting, though. Well, firstable: no matter how much saffron you add to your "cheese", it won't turn into Parmesan ...

For the badass like 100% rye (either malted or not) those bad Russians got used to look for something like this:

Anything else is half measures and a path to fatal disappointments. Ms. Rye is worth the investment.

We had -32C this night and something -20C right now (noontime). Not a big difference.
The big difference was between home/outdoors. Over 50 in centigrade.
Snow?.. Yupp, we are simply drowning in it this winter.

By the way...
Here's my #6 handcrafted belt, kind of "antic". And a bottle decorated by the Missus.
Both thangs were just given to the eldest youngster. And I do hope the belt is to become (and remain) the family heritage.
As per the bottle... well, it's refillable.

Hi Otis, hi Folks. Not long ago I made a decoction from crushed fruit wood. Not for the sake of the wood tea per se, but to reduce the intensity of extraction in the subsequent infusion in my spirits. This boiled water extract was not bad in terms of nose&tongue so, I did not put it down the sin...
