Re: Malt Extract

I have used DME in some grain bills over 20 years with zero issues. DME or LME uses higher temps and i prepare it in my large brew pot and then put that into the fermenter with the grain and sugar . Ive never done a pure ME wash due to the cost but im sure it can be done. Im not a scientist and i ju...

Shame you didnt visit ol smokey in gatlinburg. I can honestly say that the one time i visited it i tried some of the absolute worse likker ive ever had. When asked "what do you think about our corn whiskey?" I told them they were in serious need of someone to show them how to make whiskey ...

Re: Is stillin in your family tree?

Long family history on moonshing going all the way back to my scotts ancestors. I remember listening to stories about revenue agents, stills and some of the "problems" that came with it when i was little. My grandpa was the last to run any as his three sons never did. (Until me). I even we...

Not all stainless is the same

This has probably been discussed somewhere in this forum but i wanted to share this to any newbies or someone interested in fabricating a stainless pot. About 35 years ago when i started on my journey as a moonshiner i bought a nice 5x10 foot sheet of stainless at a scrap dealer to build a pot. And ...

Re: Thermometer placement

I use thermometers throughout the system. Not so much because they're needed but i have a 30 gallon pot and i got a great deal on em. And they look cool lol. The only advantage is that at a glance i can see what the temp is throughout the system so if im getting too hot i immediately know. To be hon...

Re: Smell of Distillation Process

The smell can get pretty loud when running sour mash but unless someone knows what it smells like they'll just wonder what it is. Just hope they arent overly curious or nosey. Gaztops is correct about backset, it gets FUNKY. If you have good ventilation you can greatly reduce smells by not allowing ...

Re: Worm question

You'll get more efficient cooling by plumbing the chill water into the bottom and letting it out through an overflow in the top. Or you can do what i finally did and go with a shoygun condenser and forget the worm.

Re: What do you think of this rig?

A pot still is the best way to get started. I ran a simple pot still for a good while and made some good whiskey with it. I eventually got tired of redistillation and added a thumper but i learned a lot before i did. The point to my blather is that distillation can become pretty complex so dont rush...

Re: Soldering SS Ferule to Copper Troubles

Ive always used harris flux and staybrite 8 solder using mapp gas with zero problems. Never tried normal plumbing flux or solder so no idea how that would work. Warm the thicker stainless a bit and then indirect heat on the copper and it will take the solder like a champ . Makes a nice looking joint...

Re: newbe copper still build

Honestly if you taper down into the thumper your velocity will be fine and you wont need to worry about adding bubbles in the bottom. The less restriction the better as you wont have to run the boiler so hard. A lot of pot stills have the same size piping all the way into the thumper so you should b...

It sounds like youve got a thumper to me. A gallon of wash or heads, tails etc in the thumper gives you 10% of pot volume. Ive used that ratio for decades and its always worked for me but i could be completely wrong too. I go by what works and try to apply the science to it at that point and it work...

I used a 1/2" coil for a very long time on a 20 gallon pot. You will get flooding and surging but it easily knocks down the vapor. I was going to wind a 3/4 " coil to combat the flooding but decided to build a shotgun instead. If i ever use a flake stand/coil again it will be 3/4", 1/...
