Re: Thumper questions

Though I am still new as well, I look at this a different way. If your after full heavy flavours then a one run pot still will get you there. Though many will not agree with me I consider this to be moonshine. Something a little more refined ( dryer) would be a one run through 3-4 bubble plates. Thi...

Re: Butter Rum

A good vigourous rum ferment should make its own heat once it gets going, wrap it well in blankets and let it go on its own, it should finish out ok. Bill, I agree with you, except for the fact of living in Canada and having temp swings on par with my wife’s mood swings and I’m fermenting the large...

Re: Butter Rum

Thanks Dresden, I will be using a similar idea but on a larger scale, the Butter Rum size will end up being 2 ferments of 30 gal. That’s a lot of carboys if I went that route. But I use larger containers. I have already ordered the heater wire to wrap my big fermenter and will use windshield solar b...

Re: Butter Rum

Resolved! I found out my problems! My first aquarium heater I used in my birdwatchers screwed up and ran my mash to above 130 plus degrees thus killing my yeast in the birdwatchers. I have ordered a couple of heating wires and PID controller for the fermenter which will be mounted on the outside but...

Re: Butter Rum

Dresden, thanks for the heads up, I originally planned on a full run of 80 gal when I did the upscale of the original recipe however i was planning on two separate ferments due to fermenter size. I ended up doing the one batch of 30 gal due to specific gravity and aiming for just under 1.070. The ye...

Re: What'd ya'll make today?

Just finished mashing ShineOn’s Butter Rum. This is a great easy Rum to mash in and I’m looking forward to tasting the final result! On that note I also spent the day doing the cuts on my Oatshine from a week ago!

Re: Butter Rum

Ain't no tellin why it hasn't started, I wouldn't worry tho. I haven't used that yeast so can't compare, I use a half cup yeast in a 16ish gal ferment and when I did the 45 I did half pound. Don't worry bout no nutes for a rum wash, there's plenty in the moll. Maybe a big pinch of Epsom salt. gofer...

Re: Butter Rum

Thanks for the advice, I stopped at 30 gal as the specific gravity was lower than expected , my plan was two batches of 40 gal in total. I used safeale be 134 yeast and did a starter with half mash and water. I did not add any nutrients as I thought the molasses would suffice for that. The yeast wen...

Re: Butter Rum

Help and advice needed! I ran my mash almost to the plan in the above message, last night I pitched my yeast and 12 hours later I have no action! Checked my PH which is at 5.7 and temp is at 84 deg. I’m at a loss why this is not ripping through the c02 bucket! Most know I post videos in a similar fa...

Re: Butter Rum

I have mashed in a 80 gal batch of this butter rum. I also run a 15 gal keg still. I will run the first batch in my column setup with two bubble plates. This is to get an idea which profile I want and an experiment to compare against a double thumper setup for the remainder of the runs. Also by doin...

Re: fish tank heater for mash

Thanks folks Thought I bought a quality unit which is digital with a thermostat. I was hoping for a plug and play version which is rated 500W planning on having the ability of fermenting in the garage during the winter months. No matter I will yank it after the birdwatchers is finished. I re-pitched...

Re: Overheated mash

So SG is at 1.06. Down from start of 1.068 so it didn’t get too far before the great Yeast Genicide ! Pitched new yeast and when I did the starter it just started overflowing the container as I got it to the fermenter! This yeast is far more active than the 1118, kind of caught me off guard! Just he...

Re: Overheated mash

Yes the bad taste may be the risk, I used 1118 as the first yeast, but this time will pitch using bakers yeast. I still have to take a specific gravity reading before pitching. But temps are correct now and I’m am hydrating the yeast. When I do the finder dip I still find it very sweet and the smell...

Hello Bud, also in the same area and there are a lot of resources for us to draw upon, Just got back from visiting Dillions Distillery and if you get a chance have a visit and take the tour of the local Distilleries in your area.

No Longer Lurking

Hello all, I have been here for a bit, but have come out of lurking mode to try and participate more. Re: A new youtube channel for distilling ?

Jessie, Looking forward to the Canadian Rye, but when you mentioned a distill using Grapes can I possibly steer you in the direction of doing a Cognac style offering. Making a Cognac and flavoring it to a discontinued product called Navan has been one of my utmost goals!
