Re: Failed Whiskey Mash - Everytime
[quote="Mrschmitt"]I am trying to make my first whiskey. I am using the following recipe: 8.5 lbs. of crushed corn (sometimes called flaked maize) 2 lbs. of crushed malted barley* 6.5 gallons of water 1 package of bread yeast(Fleischmann's Active Dry works well)" It's better, cheaper,...

Gelatinization range of corn is 144° to 169°F. ... so 165°is sufficient.acfixer69 wrote:I am not the all grain guru but the 165 F is not high enough for corn. But would work for the barley. I'll let the all grainers get to the details. Looks like you are getting close.

Re: Just Post a Pick of a Rig To NOT Make
I particularly like the gasoline, diesel, and propane containers next to the burner. As for the rest of the set up, I've probably ended up with similar connections on the weekends that I did 3 complete separate runs and made the cuts by taste in between runs.

Re: mason jar lids
If not copper, then most piping that carries our household water supply is either PVC, which is used for cold water, or CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride), used for both hot and cold water. I don't see the logic in being concerned about the BPA (Bisphenol A) in a jar lid sealing ring when we are ...

Re: Spin Dry Grains with 3200RPM Spin Dryer
Be careful about using appliances that are not designed as food-grade applicable. Running a wash through such a machine can introduce your brew to brass, aluminum, pot metals, and plastics, not to mention metal shavings and other unwanted byproducts of the manufacturing process. All of which are not...

Just reading this thread for the first time on December 20, 2018. Still relevant, still worthy of our time.

Re: Storing Copper Mesh in %50 Alcohol
Copper mesh does not need to be stored in alcohol or any other special liquid. Soak your mesh with a water and kitchen dish soap mixture, or a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water, rinse well, let dry, then store it in zip-lock bags or plastic boxes to keep insects from nesting in it. Rinse to remove any ...

Re: Hi, new member from the Ozarks of Missouri.
Hey, Brum. I'm just northeast of you near St. Louis. All-grain is the hoot! Don't give up on sugar washes though, we got a few good ones around here that don't require essences or other make-up. Good luck on your journey, and Welcome to Home Distiller! Thanks for the welcome. I've seen some interes...

Re: Hi, new member from the Ozarks of Missouri.
Hey, thanks for the good advice. I recognize this one, it's a upright tree-form Juniper, the Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana). Awesome gin base. I'll have to fight the birds off to score any berries. BrumThe Baker wrote:Check that the Junipers are the non-toxic variety!

Hi, new member from the Ozarks of Missouri.
I’ve been enjoying the posts on here for a while now. Some very informative discussions going on. I’m what we all call a newbie to this fine craft. I’ve not begun distilling just yet, but am near the end of some major research into equipment, ingredients, and old style techniques. I’ll be working wi...
