Re: Turbo Clear
RD, Turbo clear usually consists of two "agents". And they are needed for turbo washes, because - contrary to the washes presented in the tried & true recipees department - they do not clear very easy. The first "agent" is a signaling product that tells the yeast cells to st...

Re: Turbo Clear
Don't listen to the Anti-Turbo demagogs. Turbo yeast is fantastic. It is a great learning help. Everybody should either experiment with Turbo or go back to the beginners and do it all over again. The very off taste is what is useful. It helps to avoid smearing, determine the right distillate volume ...

Re: Better Cuts with better Dilution
One rather interesting observation after a few runs is that a higher alcohol content doesn't nessesarily mean a pure distillate. It is simply easier to detect the off notes on the palate with a low alcohol spirit. Weak and Strong liquor are basically the same. One has more water than the other. In a...

Re: Better Cuts with better Dilution
I have so far taken my cuts from the 4th decentile to 7.5 but Im starting to wonder if some of that wet socks smell is from early tails. Another factor Im using is 2nd distill volume. I go for exactly 29 percent when only doing a wash distill. 10 gallons mash =2.9 gallon low wines. After 2.9 gallon ...

I am a bit new to sugarwashes..The distill tastes and smell wet socks. Should it?
Then If one could rank the impact which would do most harm to smell and taste
turbo yeast, congenes or does sugarwash generally taste different or worse than grain mash?

Re: ABV Does NOT need to be High!!!
Interesting topic. Pure spirit is only for Gin..Not even vodka need 90 ABV to get pure. It gets really fine after 40. The problem seem to correlate some with the extensive use of column stills. It will separate Heads and Tails in 2 halfs and as you go along you reflux much of the Heads ( volatiles )...

Re: how to get higher output for potstill w.worm?
Just in case you overload the capacity of your boiler and that worm is too skinny use a one way overpressure valve anywhere above the liquid line. ( usually above 2/3 of the hight ) Other than that you need to increase the inner diameter of the worm. Maybe 1 inch or so can deal with more flow and he...

Re: Typical Alcohol Proof From A Pot Still ?
If you read back through this thread you will see that many people have said that pot stilling high abv washes is not the way to go. 20% would be considered extremely high. My wash landed somewhat lower. 12bv ( I guess it's on the higher side ) With two distills I reached 42. Let' s assume I had st...

Well I did a similar run. Coobra 48 Turbo and the Mash hit abv 12 after just 36 hrs ( I did a double distill and finally got ABV 42. ) So That 5 gallon Mash I threw into the boiler for the 1st Wash Distill and on the other side came out 1.35 Gallon/33ABV( I simply stopped at 1.35 or at around 5100 m...

I am not as tolerant now . I get drunk from around 10-20 ml of 80abv.
In my youth I could drink 20 cl. It is still 10 times less than this guy.At the time I had a. very high tolerance and 30 pr 40 cl would probably have killed me as I felt back then.

One might argue for using hogh temperature sealers on the outside due to overpressure.
I am sceptic myself. Does anyone have any info on underpressure inside a boiler or need for backplugs?

Thanks for the extraction info. It make sence. I think that I will try my idea anyway and see if I somehow can compensate for the flavour loss ( e.g. using even longer matured brown vodka ) for the mix. I certainly like creamy and cloudy whiskeys. I will return with results in 8years.

Re: Whiskey in a fractionating column
Technically that's brown vodka you're making. It is easily consumed. When doing a whisky you can't ( I might be wrong :egeek: ) just mix high proof top with low proof bottom products. At least I have not found a thread that explains how. Neither have I found any information on this site that can tel...

I am very interested in experimenting. You ask who would wanna have High ABV ? No idea. Perhaps the Vodka distillers. I just wonder how column stills manage to make low proof alcohol for Whisky? One cool thing would be to go extra low and create an oily and creamy Whisly just 68 or so. Wait 3 years ...

I saw this video about methanol intoxication from homedistilling. The guy was treated for days or weeks and under 24 hrs emergency care. So how could this even be possible? The guy had a methanol level in the blood that doctors had calculated to be 25.4 gram. They claim he drank grain liquor. I'd sa...

Re: Highest ABV to distill
If you do whisky the cask strength is lower and more oils gives great flavours. The typical extra low proof is synonumous with quality Bourbon. I know its a bit off topic but speaking of highest ABV one might be interested in the differences in tradition between European and US whiskeys. When we eur...

Great to have hard numbers, but don't just look at the methanol, boys. Looks at the acetone numbers! Helluva lot more in the fores. 4 times more, in fact. 10 times more iso-butanol, nearly 10 times more iso-amyl alcohol, 35(THIRTY FIVE!) times more ethyl acetate, and so on and so forth. All of thos...

Of course the increment would be different from still to still, even from run to run. By doing a test run you automatically get the some kind of calibration for a specific type..A hint what ABV you should feed your boiler with to get reach your target. I was wondering because I'm running a reflux st...
