Rednick, each has its benefits. The refractometer is quick and easy. The hydrometer can give a better reading with pulpy mashes. I use both in different situations. What kind of flavor does this have? I'm not really a fan of whiskey such as Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Evan Williams. Is it like these? I know there would have to be some aging to get their flavors but is that what this is outside of the aging?

I haven't made my first run yet but from what I've read you don't want to use a plastic container to catch the alcohol in.
